The NHL fined Islanders forward Frans Nielsen $5,000 on Wednesday for slashing Coyotes forward Martin Hanzal on Tuesday night, the league announced.

Nielsen was assessed a minor penalty for his two-handed slash after Hanzal cross-checked him into the boards in the third period of the Islanders’ 6-1 win.

Coyotes wing Mikkel Boedker received two minutes for roughing after tackling Nielsen from behind following the slash. Boedker said he was protecting his teammate and would do it again.

From Sporting News:

“I’ll be there for my teammates when something like this happens,” Boedker said after the game.
