The Oakland Athletics will start Sonny Gray for Game 5 of the American League Division Series against the Detroit Tigers, A’s manager Bob Melvin said.

Gray, a 23-year-old rookie, is getting the nod over All-Star Bartolo Colon.

Gray pitched eight scoreless innings, allowing four hits and striking out nine in the A’s Game 2 victory and Colon allowed three runs in Game 1, as the Tigers went on to the victory in that game.   Gray has a 1.85 ERA in his last seven starts.

Gray will be matched up against Tigers ace Justin Verlander, who went seven innings in striking out 12 in a 1-0 loss in Game 2.

Rooting for you, A's, but is sending out a 16 year-old kid to pitch in the deciding game a good idea?

@MrTemecula  idk, i watched game 2 and the Tigers couldn't touch him. Will see if the pressure packed game gets to him.

@j7apple @MrTemecula I agree with j7apple here I think.  Colon already got knocked around a bit.  Only the second time the kid starts against the Tigers in his career.
