New York Jets linebacker Antwan Barnes will miss the rest of the season because of a knee injury, according to Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com. The news comes in the same week that the Jets announced that quarterback Mark Sanchez will also be out for the season after undergoing shoulder surgery.

The 28-year-old Barnes is one of the Jets’ top pass rushers this season, but he suffered a severe knee injury in the team’s 30-28 last-second win over the Atlanta Falcons on Monday night. He was trying to tackle the quarterback, but his knee buckled when he planted his foot to get around Falcons tackle Lamar Holmes. Barnes has two sacks and leads the Jets with 12 quarterback hits this season.

Barnes, who signed a three-year deal with the Jets worth $4 million, is two years removed from a career year with the San Diego Chargers, in which he had 11 sacks. The Jets had signed him in free agency in part, Cimini reported, because the team liked the fact that he was familiar with playing under Rex Ryan’s system, as they had both been with the Baltimore Ravens in 2007-08. In Barnes’ place, New York re-signed outside linebacker Ricky Sapp, who had been waived last Saturday.

The 3-2 Jets play at home on Sunday afternoon against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
