Contacted about the USC job, Tony Dungy again made it clear that his coaching days are over . (Getty Images)

USC’s search for a football coach has been mostly hush-hush since the firing of Lane Kiffin. Denver Broncos defensive coordinator and USC alum Jack Del Rio has been linked to the job, but he has said there’s nothing to speak about on the subject.

Now comes news that USC had at least one other name in mind.

The Trojans reached out to a former Super Bowl-winning coach. NBC Sports analyst Tony Dungy said on the Dan Patrick Show that “representatives” of USC had gauged his interest in the job — only to be told he wasn’t interested.

Dungy pointed to his lack of college coaching experience and said again that his coaching days are over. He also said that USC reached him through an unusual source: his pastor.

Rumor is that the reason Dungy is telling this to USC is that he doesn't want to coach there.

Too bad Tony didn't quit coaching before his son committed suicide.

Through his...pastor?

Says a lot about the sleazy world of college sports, that they'd try to get to a guy through his pastor.

Also says a lot about the pastor...

Its refreshing to see someone say what he means and means what he says.

That's right - he's Michigan born and bred.  He'd have been a fish out of water at the University of Spoiled Children.

I wouldn't touch that job with a 39 1/2 foot pole if I were him. He said he doesn't want to coach again, but I think if he had a change of heart, the Detroit Lions job would be perfect for him. He's from Michigan originally, and if they were to sweeten the pot with a $8-$10 million a year salary and also be a co-GM with total control of the franchise and have to only answer to the owner, I think he would have to listen.

Tony Dungy wouldn't take that job because he's too honest.  He wouldn't break the rules that's required by college coaches in order to remain competitive.  And that's a compliment to Mr Dungy.

Tony Dungy just wants to remind people that he is still alive.

@GaryConstable1 agree completely. Dungy used to be coach of the Tamp Bay Bucs. Look what they have now. He's an honorable man in a less than honorable profession.
