The New England Patriots signed wide receiver Austin Collie on Thursday, according to a tweet from ESPN Boston reporter Field Yates.

The move will give the Pats another option alongside Julian Edelman as well as some insurance for the team while Danny Amendola continues to rehab a groin injury and remains out indefinitely. As of Wednesday, four of the team’s six wide receivers were on the injury report.

To clear a roster spot for Collie, the Patriots could look at placing Vince Wilfork on the IR, according to Yates. The defensive tackle tore his Achilles tendon Sunday and will miss the rest of the season.

Collie spent three years with the Indianapolis Colts after a standout college career at BYU, in which he led the NCAA in receiving yards during the 2008 season.

The 27-year-old signed a one-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers at the beginning of August but was kept off the roster at the end of the month during final cuts. Earlier in the summer, he worked out with the Patriots.

Last season, Collie missed all but one game because of a ruptured patellar tendon in his right knee, and he has suffered multiple concussions throughout his four years in the league. For his career, Collie has 173 catches for 1,845 yards and 16 touchdowns. From 2009 to 2011, he caught at least 54 passes each season for the Colts.

Given his multiple concussions, I hope Collie is getting expert medical advice in choosing to continue playing.

Richard Rameriz, the fact you would take the time to make that comment shows just how jealous you are of Pats fans, and the successes of the last dynasty in the NFL. Go root for your garbage team but continue to be butthurt by the success of the Pats, makes us fans laugh in your patethic face.

So the Patriots have gone from signing criminals to signing people who should no longer be playing due to multiple concussions. I wish the best for Collie. As a Utah fan I hated him as a player when he played for our rivals BYU. He is a self-righteous loud mouth, but as a human being I wish he would quit while he still has a semblance of health. Sure he wants to play, but the NFL needs to create some standards based upon science  to protect players from themselves and coaches like Coach Shanahan, who care more about winning than they do the health of their players.

@Richard--Ramirez You're going to have to try harder than that. Since Spygate, they have lost two Superbowls - true - but there are about thirty other teams who would have loved to have been there and our boys just keep on winning games and petty, jealous fools just can't stand it. Are you one of those petty, jealous fools??
