Former major league outfielder Chad Curtis was sentenced Thursday to seven to 15 years in prison for inappropriately touching teenage girls. He received the maximum penalty allowed by Michigan law.

Curtis’s sentencing came after a jury this summer found the 44-year-old two-time World Series champion guilty of six counts of criminal sexual conduct.

Curtis was found guilty of touching the girls last year when he was a volunteer weight-room strength trainer at a Detroit-area high school. A 16-year-old girl accused him of touching and kissing her breasts. Two 15-year-old girls also said Curtis inappropriately touched their buttocks.

Between 1992 and 2001, Curtis played 10 MLB seasons, including terms with the Angels, Tigers, Dodgers, Indians, Yankees — with whom he won two World Series rings — and Rangers.

He'd have gotten less time if he had murdered one of them instead. Why is homicide so poorly punished these days.

He only touched their buttocks to make sure they were contracting their gluts while lifting wts.

If he had been a woman teacher he could have raped them and gotten off without any jail time at all.  Too bad he is a man.

Very interesting sentence....wonder what the judge's rational was....this seems really harsh, especially given the sentences meted out to priests....

A 15 second massage gets you 15 years!

OK, so apparently anybody who criticizes the length of the sentencing is themselves a pedophile, and should be kept away from all kids and/or locked up?  Yeah, that's really logical.

I don't see many people claiming that what Curtis did was acceptable.  In fact, many posters criticizing the sentence have made it very clear that they think it was immoral, illegal, whatever.

If somebody gets a DUI and is sentenced to 20 years in prison, I'm not saying it's OK to drive drunk if I criticize that sentence.  If someone gets caught shoplifting at Macy's and is sentenced to be publicly stoned, it doesn't mean that I condone shoplifting if I complain.

There's crime, and there is punishment for crime.  We live in a civilized society where hopefully, the punishment fits the crime.  7-15 years for touching a teenage girl is completely ridiculous.  And yes, there is a distinction between a 16 year old and an 8 year old, both physically and psychologically.  And yes, there is a huge difference between inappropriate touching and violent rape.

And yes, I know, I'm sure some of you will kill me or hurt me if I even come near your teenage daughter, don't worry, I won't.

Once again, 7-15 years for inappropriately touching a teenage girl is COMPLETELY RIDICULOUS.

He is probably innocent. Teenagers and girls never lie. They probably had a crush on him and he was not interested so they made it all up....

If Sandusky was at Notre Dame nothing would have happened.... The priests would have helped cover it up....

What exacerbated the crime is that he was in a position of authority over the girls as a member of the school faculty. It is automatically assumed that he was in a position to intimidate them into a sexualized act. I think it is harsh, but the reality is that if such laws were not im place, odler people would be having a field day because a person that age simply is not mature enough mentally or emotionally to handle a sexual relationship with someone that much older and are subject to manipulations an older person would be better equipped to deal with..

In this country, or more accurately in this CULTURE, we do not raise girls to be considered sexually mature before they are 18 years old by the calendar. 'Nature', however, disagrees with that. A girl can be fully a woman several years before that. So, if an adult man is attracted to a young woman who is, say 16 or 17, that doesn't necessarily make him a 'pervert'.

However, an adult man should not pursue, or even attempt to pursue, a young woman that age, but not because it's something that is against 'nature', but because it's ILLEGAL! That law needs to be respected, because a young woman is most likely not psychologically prepared for a physical relationship with an adult at that age (some aren't prepared even at 21 or older!).

The definition of a 'pedophile' is not being attracted to women who are considered underage according to some law, but being sexually attracted to a CHILD, one who has not yet even reached puberty. We may still consider young women under 18 as 'children', but inasmuch as they are able to bear children themselves, obviously 'nature' does not.

Regardless of all that, what Curtis did was obviously unwanted and unwelcome by these young women. We might disagree with the hardness of his sentence, but there is no question he deserved to answer legally for what he did.

Touch a teen girl, get 7 to 15.  Shoot and kill a teen boy, walk free and become a hero to the right...

7-15 years for touching a precocious little bottom!!!! We are a sick nation, and getting sicker. Maybe he should receive counseling, making him stand back 10 yards and use a megaphone to tell these little urchins how to lift weights, but NOT prison. Not even one day. I am ashamed again to call myself an American. We must be the laughing stock of the rest of the world.

Freaking pedofile!  15 and 16 are still children.  Anyone who sides with this pedofile has serious problems.

Some of you posters are sick.

You have sympathy for a child molester?

You have more feelings for dogs than you do human beings.

You'd be lucky to get 7-15 living days if you touched my 16 yr old.

Ray Lewis is involved in a murder and serves no time, but Curtis gets 7-15 years for just touching? Yeah, he's a sleaze, but 7 months would have been more appropriate. Something is rotten in Michigan.

Wow, 7 to 15 years in prison for squeezing a teen girl's butt and touching another one's boobs. That's freaking crazy. He probably could have rapped them and got a sentence a third as long!

Seven years! America is a vindictive country.

@Sandeep It's a harsh sentence, for sure, but he was in a position of authority over the girls.    Therefore, the sentence is not ridiculous.  He should have gotten even more time for being so stupid.  Putting someone on probation, who has been convicted of murder, now THAT's ridiculous!

@ShifterKart

One of the girls did admit to having a crush on him. So you are probably not to far off on your thinking.

@jlnew130331 he shouldn't have attacked zimmerman and pounded him, court proved thugon was the agressor and on top of zimmerman.

@jlnew130331  by "teen boy" are you referring to the wannabe thug, druggie, future gang banger?

@Betty6 Anyone who thinks that 15 and 16 are still children has serious problems. You need to grow up. The 15 and 16 year olds today are a lot different from the ones you are used to. They will actually survive getting touched on their breasts or bottoms, although you may not. If they were 6 or 7, it would be traumatic. If you have a teen aged daughter, why don't you speak to her and ask her how earth-shaking it would be to her if someone 'inappropriately touched her'.

AlSharpton
AlSharpton

@Terry Right. Mr. Curtis is not a dog but a human being. Human beings sometimes make mistakes. Hopefully, the penalty for the mistake is commensurate with the mistake. In his case, it is totally ridiculous to have him put in prison for 7 to 15 years for such a trivial mistake. I am sure that the young ladies involved have already made remarkable recoveries from this 'frightening ordeal'. Yet, many of these posters don't seem to understand that, but rather want the man to be punished severely. Where is the sympathy, compassion, understanding?

You are right - some of you posters are sick.

AlSharpton
AlSharpton

@Terry You're the sick one, Bubba. There is a difference between molesting a child and touching the bottom of a 15 year old, who is BTW NOT a child any more. You need help.

AlSharpton

@dgivens1 Then keep your 16 year old locked up in your closet. Someone, probably some 17 year old boy who you don't approve of is going to touch her. You are living in a fantasy world. It must be nice.

@Zach9 Yes, vindictive and SICK. And we keep wondering, 'Why don't they like us?'

@goodnamesaretaken @Sandeep The premise of the power-relationship between an Adult and a Minor is the very premise of the law, not an aggravating factor.

Throwing the book at someone = Max Sentencing, is a way of saying that a person has no value to society and should be sentenced for punishment, rather than rehabilitation and penitence.

Given where his actions, such as they are described above, fit on the spectrum of sexual abuse, I find it impossible to imagine that he is irredeemable, or beyond rehabilitation, and find it ridiculous to suggest that 7 years is required to achieve that end.

Now if you are feeling righteous or enraged at such actions, I fully sympathise. However, investigating an individual and sentencing is something to be done in cold blood and with balance.

This doesn't pass the smell test. It seems he had a very bad Lawyer, bellicose Prosecutor (the kind that terrorize defendants into plea-bargains), or there was a failure of judicial balance and independence.

Sandeep
Sandeep

@goodnamesaretaken @Sandeep OK so it is at least ridiculous relative to sentencing for other more serious (IMO) crimes.  If you're one of those people that thinks everybody who commits a crime should be locked away for good, then yes, it's not ridiculous.

@ssonimac @jlnew130331 He hadn't done anything wrong and no matter what you think of his appearance or asparations, none of it warrented a death sentence. GZ followed that kid, picked a fight, then shot the kid when he started to lose the fight. Given that logic, maybe these girls deserved to get molested by Curtis, aye?

GenariumTremens
GenariumTremens

@ssonimac

Does that matter? Should we shoot anyone we think wants to be a thug, or who smokes weed or who we think wants to be a gang-banger in the future? Is that really, seriously what you're suggesting?

Odin's Goat
Odin's Goat

@ssonimac  We both know jlnew is referring to the Trayvon Martin case... and without any evidence you have branded this dead teenager a thug, a druggie, and a future gang banger.  And even if he was those things he still didn't deserve to be shot dead while walking home.  Shame on you.

Odin's Goat

@Retired Navy: CMAA  now we see why the armed forces are in deep sh*t when it comes to sexual harassment.  Way to post a stupid comment.

@AlSharpton  He was charged with multiple FELONY counts of criminal sexual conduct.  Do you understand that?  He used a position of power to prey on girls.

Now it's easy for you to b!tch about his punishment anonymously on a comment board, but if you really feel so strongly that Chad Curtis suffered an injustice then go put a sign on the front of your house (or crappy apartment) that states your true feelings about how it's ok to touch kids. Good luck.

@kdbarbershop @ssonimac @jlnew130331 He was buying the ingredients to make the drug that they use in the inner cities. A fact left out by the liberal media. He got shot for being a thug and attacking someone. So jlnew is correct...
