Report: Alex Rodriguez claims he was duped into taking PEDs

Defense lawyers reportedly are arguing that Alex Rodriguez didn’t know he was using illegal PEDs. (Elsa/Getty Images)

Alex Rodriguez’s case before his Major League Baseball arbitration grievance hearing is partly based on his claim that he thought the substances he used from the Biogenesis clinic were legal supplements, according to a New York Daily News report.

Rodriguez and his attorneys are presenting his defense to a three-person panel that will rule on the 211-game suspension given by Major League Baseball. That defense goes against testimony given on Monday and Tuesday by the clinic’s founder, Anthony Bosch.

VERDUCCI: Ranking the playoff teams

The report says that Bosch, a MLB collaborator and main witness, has attempted to validate Biogenesis documents and his own electronic communications with Rodriguez in a dealer-source relationship that challenges his claim of innocence:

If the Biogenesis products were legitimate, MLB argues, why were they so expensive and why were the transactions so secretive?

Attorneys for Rodriguez could get their first opportunity to cross-examine Bosch on Wednesday.

On Monday, the Daily News reported  that Florida prosecutors have launched an investigation into Bosch and his Biogenesis clinic and have issued subpoenas for documents and other “material issues.”

Why are they even wasting time with the appeal processor ? This guy is nothing but a lying piece of crap. Does he really think that society is as stupid and he is ? This guy is a friggin moron. Alex, do us all a favor and shut up and take what you deserve. You really are a disturbed individual, you egotistical idiot. You should be banned for life and lose all the awards that you have cheated from others.

They should tack on another year for wasting the moderator's time. God I cannot wait until this tool crawls under a rock and retires. Sooo tired of hearing about him. If the transactions were on the up and up, you would not be buying them at a strip mall somewhere. You would go to a regular doctor.

You've got it backwards, Mr. Rodriguez.  You are dumber than everyone else.  Everyone else isn't dumber than you.

Let the appeal run its course. They have a lot more information about this than anyone of us in here.  I might want to point out that there is a lot of hypocrisy in all this.  Ballplayers have been using all kinds of "remedies" for as long as the game has been around.  Beginning with grandma's secret potions, to muscle-building drinks and food supplements in the 30s, 40s, 50, stimulants, pain-killers, uppers, downers, grass, and, so forth, drug-based "enhancers" to improve performance have been around a long time.  He never tested positive, which tells you something about the owners and MLB; they went after him/others only when they saw that they could make hundreds of millions of dollars in pay/fines.  He was the squeaky wheel, so, everyone else got 50 game suspensions, but, he got 200+!  This is all crock, and, not worth getting all excited about!  I hope he wins his case and gives foot-dragging Selig and the greedy owners something to retire with!

While A-Rod was never the sharpest knife in the drawer, it took him quite a while to figure out it's better to be thought stupid than a lousy cheater . . . which is what he is.

Mariano Rivera was universally loved and this guy is universally hated.  I don't think that A-Rod is a bad man but I think that he is a stupid one. Wow I hope all of baseball stops this long term contract insanity.

Considering how stupid A-Roid is, I would actually believe him. However, even a dummy would know better than to spend millions of dollars in order to hit over-the-top stats. There has to be a much cheaper way to improve your performance at the plate.

I would not believe him now if he told me that the Pope was a Catholic !

It's possible, if A-Rod had an IQ of 60, that he truly did not understand what was happening to him, in which case he could claim he was duped.

This would explain a lot of other things, actually.

He's talking about when he was in high school, right?  Cause that's when he started.  COME CLEAN, aROID!

Come on, I came up with better excuses than this when I was in elementary school. Is this really the best he could come up with after all these months.

Hey, maybe Aaron Hernandez thought he was holding a water pistol.

This article is a day late and a dollar short. Quoting the Daily News as a "news source"? Aren't they the ones who claimed A-Rod would say he was too injured to play again, and just collect his money?

" If the Biogenesis products were legitimate, MLB argues, why were they so expensive and why were the transactions so secretive?"

This is a half stupid argument.  Lots of legal drugs are expensive.  Why?  Because some one has a patent or the ingredients or process itself is expensive.  If the benefit is enough then some one will pay the price demanded.

The fact that such transactions were "secret" though is more of an indicator of what Rodriguez might have truly believed or not believed.

MLB puts out a list of banned substances, drugs a player will be suspended for  if they put into their body.

At that point it becomes the player's responsibility to not use those substances (or at least not get caught using those substances).  Anything explanation beyond "Yes, I was caught cheating"  is just an excuse

Do not worry folks, eventually A-rod will run out of excuses, there are only so many combinations of words in the English language, oh crap then A-rod will turn to Spanish and the final coupe de Gras "yo no hablo Inglés"

By the looks of things, MLB was easy on A-rod with the 211 games, This guy should have been banned for life a long time ago.. I don't know how intelligent people can sit in a room and have this "guy" insult their intelligences, way to go A-rod speaking to people like they are stupid always works... All these denials, appeals and that is the best excuse your millions bought, i guess millions don't buy what they use to anymore...  crap hire me for half that i could think of better excuses more plausible ones....

@dinohealth What a dumb response. But thanks for pointing out all of the 'hypocrisy' - I guess they should just sweep it under the carper then. Maybe A-Rod can claim he thought it was one of 'Grandma's secret potions"!!! Bwahahahaha... Idiot.

@bobdevo Actually, based on his contract and stats, he is quite a good cheater! One of the best ever!

@Bearsclone Whether or not drugs are legal is not the issue. (Btw all steroids are illegal for any reason in the US, even to manufacture.  Only Testosterone is legal).

If prescription drugs are used, you must receive a special use exemption from the league, so he would have had to disclose it.

@joe6647 Except, of course, that he WASN'T caught cheating. He passed every test.

@Joebuckster @dinohealth

No, they shouldn't sweep ANYTHING under the rug. Just give everyone a fair shake. Suspend A-Rod for the appropriate amount of games not this 211 game nonsense.

Selig is going legacy shopping on the back of a disliked player, so that no one can notice the railroading going on. I mean, who's gonna take A-Rod's side, right?

The true hypocrisy is that MLB, the owners, the press, ALL LOOKED THE OTHER WAY during The Steroid Era and now want to act all holier than thou. I hope A-Rod drags 'em all down to Hell with him.

dinohealth
dinohealth

@Joebuckster @dinohealth What MLB should have done, many, many years ago, was turn a page.  A strong testing and enforcement program from a particular point on (2000)!  They did not do that, and, were forced into these witch hunts, because they were making a whole bunch of money as records were falling.  Hypocrisy is an understatement!  Criminal defrauding of the fans and the game is more like it!  That is what happens when you let a monopoly operate outside the law!

KikoJones
KikoJones

@RaymondSmith @dinohealth

Yes, he was. And why has no one else from that list paid a price? Why isn't David Ortiz being called a dirty cheater. Oh, that's right: A-Rod is the only guilty one, everyone else has plausible deniability.

dinohealth
dinohealth

@RaymondSmith @dinohealth Nope, never did.  Don't you think that if he that he was doing an illegal drug, he would have avoided testing at all costs; even taken a suspension?

CobyPreimesberger
CobyPreimesberger

@iammagicland @joe6647 yeah and so did marion jones and so did lance armstrong, and he has not passed every test as in 2009 after he said in 2007 i never used anything he admitted that 2001-2003 he admitted using, but oh then magiclly stopped in 2004.  when you keep coming up with excuse after excuse you eventually run out of lies.  also when the yankees didn't orignally call him up, was because he pulled himself out of a game and told the team doctor he had a strained quad and the team did an mri that confirmed it
