MLB suspends, fines Carlos Gomez, Reed Johnson after melee
Brewers outfielder Carlos Gomez and Braves outfielder Reed Johnson have each been suspended one game and fined by Major League Baseball for their actions in a melee during Wednesday night’s game in Atlanta.
Braves players objected to Gomez’s actions after he slugged a first-inning home run off starter Paul Maholm. First baseman Freddie Freeman and Maholm yelled at Gomez, as he rounded first base. Gomez yelled back at Maholm as he slowly circled the bases. Tempers boiled over when Braves catcher Brian McCann stood in the third baseline, blocking Gomez’s path to the plate and both benches emptied.
Johnson was fined for throwing a punch at Gomez, who was ejected but awarded home plate by the umpires despite never touching it.
McCann was part of a similar post-homer incident involving Jose Fernandez two weeks ago.
