Twins shut down catcher Joe Mauer for rest of year
Mauer hasn’t played since taking a foul ball off his mask on Aug. 19. The Twins have seven games left in the season.
He is under contract with the team until 2018 and said in an interview that he never had thoughts of not playing again this season.
“Shutting it down never entered my mind,” Mauer said last month. “I want to get out there. Obviously you want to be smart about it, but I definitely want to get out there and play. I don’t like watching. I definitely want to be out there with the guys and out there doing what I love. As soon as I can, that’s what I want to do.”
Mauer, 30, hit .324 with 11 home runs, 47 RBI and 35 doubles in 113 games this season.
“I’m holding out hope, as you know, that we ultimately can get him back on the field, so we’re working toward that,” Twins general manager Terry Ryan said just last week.
