Atlanta Falcons running back Steven Jackson could be out longer than originally anticipated because of a lingering hamstring injury, ESPN.com’s Vaughn McClure reported Monday.

According to the report, Jackson will be out another 2-3 weeks — which could keep him on the sidelines until Week 7. He will likely miss this week’s game against the New England Patriots, as well as the following week’s matchup against the New York Jets. The Falcons have a bye in Week 6.

Jackson suffered the injury during the Falcons’ Week 2 win over the St. Louis Rams, Jackson’s former team. According to McClure, Jackson’s injury was initially classified as a thigh issue.

Jackson has remained remarkably injury-free throughout his NFL career, having played in at least 12 games in each of his nine previous seasons in the league. In 14 carries so far this season, Jackson has gained 77 yards — a 5.5-yard average per carry.

Big deal. Jaquizz Rogers & Snelling showed me more Sunday than this Michael Turner redoux. Not sure what the Falcons were thinking when they brought this guy in. A 31 year old RB is still 31. They needed help elsewhere on the team. This is gonna be a long season for the Dirty Birds...

@btcvsolo I agree that it's going to be a long season for the Falcons. The reason they brought in SJ39 to replace twinkle toes Michael Turner is because he is a freak of nature and isn't scared to run up the middle instead of tip-toeing the line of scrimmage. Jacquizz and Jason will do fine to ease the load of Jackson's injury. The real issue here is that the Falcons need to finish games strong. How many games in a row now is it that Atlanta jumps out to an early lead just to let teams back in it with their conservative play calls? It's time to unleash the true potential of this Atlanta Falcons offense!!

@DannyDoyle @btcvsolo No argument there. Sooner or later, attention swings to the coaching staff's mindless play-calling. Why not try the 2 minute drill every other possession & a few longer passes down field? Pass interference is a novel way to win the field possession battle.
