Indianapolis Colts tight end Dwayne Allen will need season-ending hip surgery, coach Chuck Pagano announced Wednesday.

Allen started 14 games last year as a rookie and caught 45 passes for 521 yards and three touchdowns. His second season ends with only one catch – a 20-yard touchdown.

In his place, fellow second-year tight end Coby Fleener will become the team’s starter. Fleener was a second-round pick and was expected to excel with college teammate Andrew Luck. But Fleener’s blocking was at times undependable and he fell to the team’s second choice at tight end.

With Allen out last weekend, Fleener had one of the best games of his career. He caught four passes for 69 yards and a touchdown against the Dolphins. The Colts, who lost running back Vick Ballard to a season-ending ACL tear, will need more consistency from their remaining weapons on offense, including Fleener.
