Cynthia J. Ross, the boxing judge who scored the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Canelo Alvarez fight a draw, is stepping down indefinitely, 8 News NOW Las Vegas reports.

This is the second controversial ruling for Ross in the last 15 months. In June 2012, she was one of two judges who scored in favor of Timothy Bradley in his title bout with Manny Pacquiao, which Bradley won on a split decision.
Ross scored the Mayweather-Alvarez bout 114-114, compared to the two other judges, Dave Moretti and Craig Metcalfe, who scored the bout 116-112 and 117-111, respectively. Mayweather won by majority decision. Each judge earned $8,000 for the fight.

According to the report, Ross and the chairman of the Nevada Athletic Commission, Bill Brady, met Tuesday with the intention of reviewing her controversial scorecard from Saturday’s fight.

“To her credit, [Ross] does not want to take away from the story … So she has asked us if she can take some time off, [and] we’ve agreed. It shows the type of person she is. Bill was very understanding and supportive. He agreed that that was a great avenue to take,” NAC executive director Keith Kizer said.

All boxing judges and referees have to re-apply each year for a license.
More from 8 News NOW:

Ross has been a judge for 22 years and told 8 News NOW Sports Director Chris Maathuis that she doesn’t know if she’ll re-apply.

whats it take to be a boxing judge anyway? what are the prerequisites? i dont see how anyone who hasn't spent time in the ring personally could qualify. call me crazy but...

This is typical of a woman. She wasn't judgeing the fight itself so much as she was judging the character of the fighter. Pacquiao had a reputation of being a womanizer and gambler, she judged against him when he fought Bradley. The only way Bradley could have won that fight is if he was awarded points for hitting Pacquiao's fist with his face. Mayweather just did time for domestic violence so she awarded more points to Canelo than he really deserved. This woman was judging the person, and not the fight. Typical woman

The judge isn't stupid at all. The people who pay to watch "Maytag" fight bums, now THEY'RE stupid. You call this guy a champion? Who has he fought? Nobody. He's been carried for more than a decade and he needs to stop ducking all the real fighters or just quit. $40 plus million to beat a nobody. Joe Frazier should be turning in his grave right about now.

Judging in boxing or mma should be like football or baseball. You should be trained professionally and be graded on your fights just like football refs and baseball umps are graded on their games. The best should judge the biggest fights and be rewarded by making the most money. Having connections and applying for a license should not be the criteria......Boxing and the mma would greatly benefit from this injection of honesty and professionalism....

A woman as a boxing judge? What do boxing fans expect from this ridiculous and non sense choice? It is the same non sense as having a transexual in a miss universe contest. Miss universe is a women's contest, it is a contest for females not for guys who feel or want to be females.
Boxing should be judged by men who know the sport, men with lots of boxing experience. This fiasco proves that having a woman as a judge in a boxing match has been and will always be a big mistake, It is a non sense, it is a sacrilege for boxing.
Perhaps; it is mandatory for brainwashed mainstream boxing promoters and organizers to commit this kind of crime just to please our declining society by making what is called a "Politically correct" decision.

Commision. What a disgrace to boxing you are for not investigating Ross. But your just state workers who just want to pick up your paycheck, you don't want any extra work, don't want to add any value, or do the right thing if it requires risk and effort. Your selfish and think your an elitist doing what you want not whats right and what others deserve. Your just cowards and don't care about people. Please do the world a favor and quit. Boxing requires more dignity than you will ever have. And for the rest of our lives we will associate coward, selfish, unfair, liar, afraid, incompetent, loser, elitist, cheater, weak character, and bully with Keith Kizer, the head of the Nevada State Athletic.

Question: Do most boxing fans think this judge was stupid or corrupt? It can't be both.

I feel sorry for people who accept this hyped chump as a great fighter.  He's an expert at chicken pecking and fleeing.  I don't mind the judge scoring it a draw as I saw very little fighting at all.  Maybe half a rounds' worth out of 12.  Did Canelo look like a man who just got beat convincingly?  He hardly had a scratch on him.  If Mayweather showed his face in the 80s he would've been annihilated by 3, 4 guys - real fighters - like Thomas Hearns who never ran from anyone (cough prime Pacman). He would've wiped this midget out in a few rounds.  I have to give him credit for being a master marketer though, I know people who actually think he's an all time great lol.

Mayweather landed about 225 punches to Canelo's 120 punches and used less punches to do it.  Now, call me crazy, but thats anything but a draw.

The promoters hire the judges. The promoters own the contracts of the boxers. The judges that favor the boxers of the big promoters get hired to do more fights. Anybody see the problem?

If Ross looked decent she might be given a pass.  But CJ Ross is one ugly broad.

Between scoring the boxing match and thinking about what she is cooking for tomorrow's supper you can understand why she missed a few rounds, like ALL OF THEM !!!

this is what happens, first we give them the right to vote, then we allow them to have a side job outside the kitchen and eventually it leads to things like this, time to rewind the hands of time and shackle that woman to the stove where she belongs.

OR maybe none of my above statements are true, and it goes to show how corrupt that sport is because NO one could be that stupid to hand in a score card in that manner, damn "Cynthia" at least have some respect and dignity for yourself take pride in your work and cheat, look over on the other judge's card see how they are scoring the fight, "unless she was getting paid otherwise" The more damning thing, she was not facing any discipline prior to stepping down. I guess she had this retirement schemed all planed out by getting paid on the way out the door.

There are three different compliments about her from the Nevada Athletic Commission Executive Director in his statement. There has to be a review process and accountability for boxing judges and apparently for the NAC director as well. Frankly all three judges were off the mark.

Boxing, as far as I know, is the only sport where competitors don't know the score as they compete. Nor do the viewers. Or even the other judges. Why is this? Why isn't the score from each judge, after each round, posted for everyone to see? Does anyone know why it's done as it is? Because if the score was posted after each round everyone would have known that this judge was making a mockery of the fight long before it was over. I'm not sure what could have been done about it, but at least Mayweather would have been aware of what was happening. Isn't it time for boxing to make this change in how they score a fight?

Right here is an encapsulation of what's wrong with boxing. No punishment, no suspension, just allowed to take a break. How is it that a judge of this low caliber was allowed to score two big fights like this? And how in the holy hell was she allowed on this last fight after blowing the Pac-Bradley fight? There's no sense or integrity left anywhere in the sport. I used to be a big boxing fan. Now I tune in for a few big fights and I'm almost always disgusted by something that happens, usually the scoring.

Corrupt boxing judges are not a new story, they have always been here and will never go away. The power brokers have a vested interest in who wins and they have no problem buying off a few for greater profits down the road. It is a beautiful sport that just happens to be the most corrupt and dirty sport in history.

She already got paid off by whatever gambler bribed her to score the draw.  Same as with the Pacman fight, more than likely.  Now the heat's on, as was surely anticipated from the beginning, so she's "stepping down".

I think it's funny that nothing about her meeting with Brady discussed WHY she scored the fight a draw.

why cant they only allow former champion boxers be judges and ref?

it was completely absurd for Ross to have awarded Canelo six rounds, but not far behind her was Moretti who gave Canelo four rounds.  Seriously?  I've talked to a hundred folks who saw the fight as I did and none of them gave Canelo even 2 rounds.

Seriously angers me that he/she was judging the fight.  I watched the Bradley and Pacquiao fight and remembering that I sworn never to pay to watch a fight again.  Cynthia Ross is a moron and for her to be judging for 20 + years is a joke... Boxing has been officially going downhill for years now.

Stephen39

My buddy and I saw the fight on PPV and he was adamant that Canelo didn't win even 1 round. I agree and at the most a couple of rounds may have been even, but the fight was very one-sided. Canelo never really got a good lick in on Floyd. Floyd snapped his head back a number of times. This judge should have had her license revoked and never allowed back ringside. For boxing to let her take a break with the possibility of returning tells us all we need to know about the state of boxing in this country.

The same fate should have awaited the judges who scored Pacquiao the winner in the fight with Marquez previous to the most recent in which he was knocked out by the same opponent.

This was a long time coming... Her Pacquiao vs Bradley scorecard should have rendered her jobless.

Boxing is farce.  This is just another example of how corrupt and ungoverned the sport is.  Listen to Teddy Atlas to see how much of a joke it is.

I don't know how to properly score a fight but I can tell you right now that it was pretty obvious that Mayweather won this one pretty easily.

@TabithaSwann Oscar De Lahoya? Rickie Hatton? Manual Marquez? to name a few, and not "nobody's". True, Mayweather has fought some mismatches. But you can't take anything away from the fact that he is a very clever fighter/businessman. And he has beat among the best names in boxing.

Active? or retired? The argument against active boxers is a conflict of interest. The argument against retired former champions is the potential brain damage.

@Stephen39 I saw the same fight and I agree with you, I don't think Canelo managed 10 decent shots on Mayweather, who almost seem to allow him to hit him just to make it look remotely watchable.  I always liked Mayweather as a Boxer but not a huge fan, but it seem like he was trying not hurt the kid.
