Redskins coach Mike Shanahan: We’re not benching RGIII

NFL
Robert Griffin III

Don’t expect Robert Griffin III to be out of the Redskins lineup anytime soon. (Simon Bruty/SI)

The Washington Redskins haven’t gotten off to a very good start, going 0-2 and falling behind by big deficits to start their games.

That’s not enough for Redskins coach Mike Shanahan to consider benching quarterback Robert Griffin III for backup Kirk Cousins. He was asked if he would make a change a quarterback.

“No, no,” said Shanahan during his press conference, according to ESPN Radio. “We’ve got a lot of confidence in Robert.”
So far, the second-year signal caller has completed 63 percent of his passes for 649 yards, with five touchdowns and three interceptions. He threw just five interceptions over all of last season.

Not benching him is a insane.....Your season is over and you arent making the playoffs. Your star QB has never recovered from an injury from last year and the only thing he can do at this point is get a CAREER ending injury. So pull him and let the man recover to 100% so he can be the player he was before his injury..

Its common sense and for all you out there that are screaming play him let him continue you have ZERO COMMMON SENSE AT ALL...

It is absurd to think that RGlll will be benched. It is also naive to think that all players are going to respond and recover in the same manner that Adrian Peterson did. Clearly Shanahan was under doctors orders not to play RGlll in preseason or else he would have. Thus the rust factor. Moreover common sense suggests that you cannot run as fast in a brace as you can without one. And if you do not think that other teams are going to either exploit or test RGlll's mobility of lack there of then you do not watch NFL football. The Redskins defense also needs to improve to say the least. RGIII will not be sent to the bench. Although he should be on your fantasy football bench until he gets going. This week may be the week to take a risk that RGIII will get back on track vs. Detroit. I like RGIII this week, but check out who else will have good weeks: http://www.fantasyfballchamps.com

Mike Shanahan or "mastermind" as media dubbed is not and never was head coaching material When you give up 480 yrds passing like  Redskins did on sunday (a Shanahan tradition going back to his days in Denver) your  issue is not RGIII  albeit with an excellent backup on hand why risk your franchise player.

For a reporter to ask that question is silly and for Shanahan to reply is even worse.  Same as if it was Luck, Kaeps, Brady or Manning coming off an injury you do not Bench your Rookie of the year potential all star QB for a back up whom had 4tds and 3ints last year mainly against the Cleveland Browns...

Something is very fishy about this Bench RGIII outcry its doesn't make sense when it's your defense that is the problem. I do not see that DEFENSE stopping anyone on the schedule for the next 4 to 6 weeks. These people seem to have an agenda either it's a dislike of RGIII for this pressers claiming he will be 100%  on opening day and some fans felt lied to AGAIN... OR the antics he pulled leading to him getting hurt, OR maybe they love Kirk cousin and would rather see their guy in their although he is the less talented of the two by far OR maybe its has to do with the Skins name change and  some of those losers are here to pile on OR maybe some just hated the fact RGIII won the Heisman and rookie of the year and Andrew did not when he clearly did not deserve it... Many believe RGIII is a product of a hype machine, like the Andrew Luck and Rory McIlroy types.. Last time I checked HYPE does not give you a rookie record of 102% passer rating 20tds and 5ints while rushing for over 700 yards... TALENT DOES !!!

I love when hack writers find quotes that makes their story more news worthy and run with it instead of using common sense, putting all facts to the table and allow your readers to decide. Same scenario Tony Dungy... Payton Manning is coming off a rookie of the year and was injured, Kirk cousins is his back up. Manning's numbers are similar to RGIII, 62% completion over 600 passing, 5tds and 3ints in 2 games. DOES Tony Dungy bench MANNING... I WILL TELL YOU THE ANSWER TO THAT QUESTION....

Tony would rather cut off HIS RIGHT nut in that situation than Bench Manning... typical hypocrites... I love them ...lol

IF those losers can guarantee me Kirk Cousin would have the Skins at 2-0 then i will change my stance....if not SHUT THE BLEEP UP , you are just making yourselves look stupid !!!! These people remind me of another NARCISSISTIC  GROUP  OF  CELLAR  DWELLERS ... I just can't put my finger on it...

Whatever their reasons are it's a waste of time because RGIII is not getting benched unless he is hurt..

Now I remember Timothy Richard Tebow and his unwashed mass of mouth breathing followers. They need to leave RGIII and find Timothy Richard because at a time like this being out of a job and knowing the jig is up on his NFL career  Timothy needs all the support he can get.

Shanahan is showing that he is a very average coach at best without a star at QB.

RGIII is NOT ready to play. Sure, he can be on the field without blowing his knee out again, but he can't play the way RGIII knows how to play QB. Even if he wasn't running, he can't plant and throw, and he obviously doesn't have confidence in the knee. He's just risking getting hurt either in the knee again or somewhere else by insisting on playing.

Just because almost everyone respects Tony Dungy doesn't mean he is always right. You don't bench your best player unless he is hurt, and I doubt if Griffin is. He needs playing time to get back into the groove.  And all the points that Washington have given up have little to do with the quarterback.

There is a fellow who posts on profootballtalk.com who goes by:  LogicalVoiceSays.  Hes a redskins troll that is just horrible.  And because of him alone I despise the redskins. This 0-2 start for Washington is AWESOME!!!! HAHAHAHAHA!!!  They may be the worst team in the NFC East.  GET BACK TO THE CELLAR REDSKINS.

@JTsportsguy RG has posted two 300+ yard games with 6 touchdowns, what are you talking about?

@Whatever Agreed. Risking your franchise player who's clearly not ready when you have an excellent backup on hand is not necessary. But Redskins problem is not RGIII. They're giving up  30+ pts a game cause they have no defense a Shanahan tradition.
