Monday night’s game between the Washington Nationals and Atlanta Braves was postponed due to the shooting that reportedly killed at least 12 at the nearby Naval Sea Systems command headquarters.

The shooting also resulted in the death of at least one gunman. The area around the ballpark has been filled with police activity for most of the morning and afternoon.

The Nationals released a statement on the tragedy:

All of us here in the Nationals organization were deeply saddened to learn of the tragic events that occurred this morning only a few blocks from Nationals Park. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families.

In light of the circumstances, we have decided to postpone tonight’s game against the Atlanta Braves. Additional information will be distributed in the coming hours.

The safety of our fans is our utmost priority. As we have throughout the day, the Nationals security personnel will continue to work closely with all levels of law enforcement to reinforce the already high level of security in place at Nationals Park.

The Nationals said the teams will play a doubleheader on Tuesday, with games at 1 and 7 p.m. ET.

Leave it to republicant's to turn this tragedy into a "don't touch our guns" debate.

This becomes a us vs them gun control debate?

That's pretty sad. And very very funny to me...

Not much you can do when a guy goes crazy like this. All the laws in the world can't stop this. There are millions of guns out there.

And make gun crime penalties more severe.

Need to ban all firearms

The area is basically locked down. Police are still using the Nationals parking lot as a staging area. And it is possible that one or more gunpersons are still at large. Under the circumstances, an evening at the ballpark does not seem like a great idea.

We need stricter gun control, this is getting ridiculous.

@x72 I truly do not believe that stricter gun laws are going to stop a disturbed person with the intent to harm and/or kill people from doing so. There are many ways to bring harm to another without using a gun. We need to step up our gun EDUCATION as well as our mental health evaluations while educating others on what to look out for. It starts in the home, our schools, communities and reaches out from those platforms. By no means am I Washington's epitome of a " right wing radical" who believes in turning the streets into the wild west, but I believe more lawful citizens should take the test to be able to carry a firearm. The criminals already have their weapons, and I fear that stricter gun laws are only going to  keep guns out of lawful citizens hand's and put us in even more danger. I feel safer knowing I can protect my family from an intruder. Bottom line, something needs to happen and I don't have the answers, but I am tired of seeing innocent people die at the hands of lunatics! Perhaps we need to even the odds a little.

@x72 Is there anywhere in the USA that has stricter controls than DC? Don't be a liberal idiot.
