New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said Mark Sanchez never won the QB competition between Sanchez and rookie Geno Smith, according to a NBC Sports report.

Sanchez said he won the competition with Smith and that his shoulder injury in the preseason is why he wasn’t named as the starting quarterback. Ryan refuted Sanchez’s claim.

“Well, I never said he won the competition. I didn’t say that,” Ryan said.

Ryan said if Sanchez believes he won the competition then that was Sanchez’s own “opinion.” Ryan hopes that Sanchez’s shoulder rehabilitation goes well enough so Sanchez can be cleared to play this season.

Sanchez is reportedly considering season-ending surgery to repair a labral tear in his right shoulder.

Sanchez is still young and will restart his NFL career successfully with another team next season.  He will join a team that knows how to develop QBs unlike the Jets who stunted his growth potential because of lousy coaching, a poor offense around him, clueless ownership, and the ongoing fiasco that is the New York sports media and Jets fans.

You know what's crazy about this? Pete Carroll told everyone Sanchez wasn't ready to be an NFL QB when he left USC.

Some people should just stick to coordinator jobs.  Rex is one of them.

He really should move on and have Sanchez's tattoo removed from his arm and place Smith's there. Stop wasting time.

He is realizing his man crush with Sanchez is over - that Mark is gone at the end of the season regardless of how Gino plays.  His only chance of saving his job is to stick with his only option - Gino - and act like it was his decision all along.  Otherwise he is shown as a fool that hurt his real choice by making a bad choice to play him.

Rex Ryan should have been fired, for having Sanchez in a pre-season game late into the game. Rex Ryan is a clown, and I will be amazed if he makes it to the end of the season. Geno Smith is simply to green right now.

He loves to make headlines.  Could have just answered "we have no comment on that, Geno is our QB right now."

@TonyMcDay If Sanchez wasn't his starter than why shouldn't he be in the game with the rest of the second and third string?  I doubt the intention was to get him injured but it's quite clear that Sanchez was not going to be the starting QB of this team.

@YZLee You actually think Rex is going to change his stripes now and become more like Belichick.  He'll always have a personality that craves attention
