Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Lavonte David not only cost his team the game when he hit New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith out of bounds late in Sunday’s 18-17 loss, but it is also going to cost him in the wallet.

NFL.com reports that the league will fine David $7,875 for the hit on Smith and that the second-year player plans to appeal the fine.

Late in the fourth quarter, Smith was trying to drive the Jets into field goal range and scrambled for 10 yards before being pushed out of bounds by David.

The 15-yard unnecessary roughness penalty put the ball at the Buccaneers 30 and turned a Hail Mary heave into field goal try. Jets kicker Nick Folk won the game with a 48-yard field goal with two seconds remaining.

How does this guy get fined, and Clay Matthews doesn't?

Someone is going to make a big hit on Goodell if he keeps this up.

Was the fine for the hit or for being stupid? Because it sure was a stupid play.

I can't believe L.David's hit was worthy for a fine.  Yes, it was late and deserved the flag (wasn't ticky tack like P.King saw it).  But, a fine?

That said, I can't believe L.David's hit was worthy of a fine, but C.Matthews's on C.Kapernick is not.

Okay, I'm a Packers fan and Mathews hit CK late. It wasn't dirty like all of the Niner fans are claiming, but it was late, and if they fined David for his push on Geno, then Mathews should be fined at least $25,000 if you use the hit in Geno as an example. I find fining him in the first place is beyond ridiculous because if that play is going to draw a fine then NFL QB's better just put on flags.

A fine for that? Is this an article from The Onion?

And where the fine/suspension on Clay Matthews for trying to intentionally injure an opposing player?

Seriously NFL?!? He got flagged for the "hit" (actually just a little shove).

Where's the fine AND suspension for Clay Matthews?!?

The league's becoming a bigger joke by the minute.  What's he being fined for?

Still waiting on the Clay Matthews fine and suspension.

That was a push out of bounds.Clay Matthews lunged at Kaepernick out of bounds and should have been tossed from the game. Give me a break NFL....

And yet the league stays silent on the Clay Mathews hit. Guess the golden boy will not be fined for talking about hitting a player and then going out of bounds to do so.

@Rick58 Clay Matthews clotheslined Kaepernick. That hit should have been fined even if it happened in the middle of the field. The fact it was also out of bounds and premeditated only make it that much worse.

So if the Mathews hit was premeditated, how do you classify the two Niner D-lineman jumping on Aaron Rodgers while he was laying on the ground after being sacked? No flag, the GB sideline and lineman were calling for a flag, but we got nothing. And those two guys jumping on Rodgers was much worse than the hit Mathews put on Kaep because they could have really done him some damage. But I can see why that wouldn't bother you because it was your defense putting a premeditated hit on an opposing QB.

Really, premeditated? He knew Kaep was going to turn and run out of bounds, so he left his feet for a diving tackle? Sure I see the premeditation. Late hit, yes, dumb hit, yes, premeditated, that is a bit of a stretch.
