New York Jets owner Woody Johnson is standing behind his injured quarterback Mark Sanchez, as the team continues to tinker with who will be the long-term solution at the position.

Rookie Geno Smith will get the nod this Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Johnson said earlier that Sanchez, who was hurt in the fourth quarter of the team’s third preseason game, needed to avoid being injured. Sanchez is expected to miss a couple of weeks with a hurt throwing shoulder.

“I wished he hadn’t gotten hurt, but you’ve got to protect yourself, too,” Johnson said.

Later, Johnson backtracked from that statement saying he wasn’t Sanchez’s fault that he got hurt.

Johnson said the team has no plans to release Sanchez for now. Sanchez is set to be paid a guaranteed salary of $8.25 million this season.

“Mark will be on the team, I don’t think there’s any question about that,” said Johnson. “He’s a very, very good quarterback. Franchise quarterback, you can debate the term. There’s a competition for the job, and he’s still in the competition.”

it amazes me how much politics play apart in the NFL, its such a show sometimes, it almost has you thinking if everything is just staged. Can Sanchez be the starting QB for the New York Jets? Really, well his stats are of course not what they should be with him entering 2013 season, but there have been factors adding to that in which it involves the offensive line , injured players, RB and WR not playing to their full potential. But whose to say it cant change. Oh yes, all the fans that have never played professional football in their lives, or someone that has to deal with the ridiculousness of participating  in a pro-sport that can lead them to have a serious life threatening injury.   To be a professional athlete is no joke, especially in the NFL. Theres not enough respect given to each player that goes out there on that field and performs for the fans and the team they represent. I'm not saying i want tackling and the anger out of the game cause thats what makes it so entertaining, but just place yourself in their position. Every move is judged seriously need I say Aaron Hernandez but in the end the truth will prevail as long as theres strong points supporting it. The NFL is a way for the average joe to relax. I get so excited every football season, because its the only thing in life when it has to have a reason to exist. If a play is questionable its challenged and then sought out why or why not its not valid.  So back  to the question of Sanchez losing his job to Geno Smith, highly unlikely! However I will say Im quite impressed with Matt Sims, but whoever gets the position  (which is going to be Mark) Perform well and don't hesitate to show your love for the game.

this same article on ESPN was Titled:  WOODY TO SANCHEZ:  PROTECT YOURSELF!

what a clown that cimini guy is.   the article above has a more appropriate title but still...  of course they arent going to release him now- his contact is guaranteed this year there is no point...   if geno is terrible- make a switch in a few weeks.

It's like preparing to trade your old car in for a new one... When they ask you how your old car is running, you say.. "She's got a few miles on her, but I sure hate to let her go, she is a great car. In fact I just might keep her.. soooo... what will you give me for her?"

Of course they keep him. They don't know if Smith will be any better (the preseason did not indicate he will be) and if they release him he has zero trade value. No brainer to keep him.

"...Franchise quarterback,..."

"...There's a competition for the job,.."

Woody, franchise quarterbacks are not in competition for their jobs, period. If they are, then they are not 'franchise' quarterbacks.

"Franchise QB, you can debate the term" ?? this isn't a "moot court" presentation, your QB STINKS, about which there isn't even a discussion, never mind a debate !

of course they won't release him now. if they were going to do it they would have done it months ago.

Silly to release him now, as they save no $$.  Can't imagine anyone trading for him, but a team that has lots of QB injuries may give them something, but probably still require the Jets to pay a big part of the contract.  It they wanted to cut, they would have done before the July 1st deadline to save some additional cap room.

@j7apple hes the owner - not the GM.  what did you expect him to say? "sanchez sucks - i hate that tennenbaum gave him such a whale of a contract - otherwise his butt would have been gone already..."  thats common knowledge moron....

@jimmyjon_55555 @j7apple  I have seen owners do far more...They are all billionaires because they know how to cut loses and don't give a darn what people think about what they say.

This is an owner, and  as they say, the crap starts from the top...."still in competition"  lol
