Shortly after the Buffalo Bills announced rookie quarterback E.J. Manuel would be under center to start the season, the New York Jets announced their rookie second-round pick would also start the season opener.

After an ugly quarterback competition, Geno Smith was named New York’s starter. Many have speculated since the NFL draft that the Jets wanted Smith to beat out incumbent Mark Sanchez for the starting spot, but Smith underwhelmed during his limited preseason action.

The initial plan, according to reports, was for Smith to start the second preseason game. But he hurt his ankle and missed that game. Jets coach Rex Ryan described Smith’s play during one practice as “brutal.”

BEDARD: What We Learned from August

Smith was back for the third preseason game, and his performance that night was also brutal. He threw three interceptions and ran out of the back of the end zone for a safety. But the game was noteworthy for another reason. Ryan put Sanchez into the game in the fourth quarter, and the veteran quarterback injured his throwing shoulder. The move has been widely criticized, and there are reports that Sanchez’s injury is worse than the team initially let on. He could miss “several weeks.”

But Sanchez’s injury assured that Smith would be the starter to open the season. Last season’s crop of rookie quarterbacks, led by Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III and Russell Wilson, made an impact. Expectations are lower for Manuel and Smith, but both will have an opportunity to contribute.

If a 5th year veteran can't clearly beat out a rookie then the rookie is the clear choice

Hypothetical...play Simms in early games and give Smith 1/ a chance to fully recuperate and 2/ serious reps with the 1st team in practice, while the Jets, who ever is in charge, decide who will and can play, see Holmes, Ivory, and if this kids ready, play him in game 4 or 5, if not let Simms handle the "learning" process !

I honestly don't see anyway this can end well short of the Jets winning the Superbowl this year with Geno as the quarterback.

Couldn't possibly care any less, really...

I just cringe because Geno's another one of those loons that actually decided that SKIPPING like a 6 year old girl from the 1950's -after a good play- is somehow indicative of his athletic prowess. Who came up with that trend anyway? Find that person & feed 'em -feet first- into a wood-chipper!

I am done with the Jets.  Geno Smith is not a NFL starting QB.  He played in one of the weakest college divisions (Big East) there is and led the team to a mediocre record.

They lost 6 of their last 8 last year and lose their bowl game?  Did they win any bowl game with him leading the team?

Ridiculous waste of a pick at QB.

@Herroldo I agree.  Geno IS a big baby and wimped out when it went south last year in the mighty big east he played ....NO leadership and pouted when losing but looked liked a typical wanna be gangsta when winning.
