Wide receiver Robert Meachem will return for another stint with the New Orleans Saints after agreeing to terms with the team Tuesday, according to ESPN’s Bill Williamson.

A first-round pick of the Saints in 2007, Meachem averaged 43 catches and more than six TDs per season before signing a lucrative free-agent contract with the Chargers before the 2012 season.

Meachem, however, was a bust in San Diego with just 14 catches for 207 yards and two touchdowns last season. His disappointing performance led the Chargers to release him during last week’s cut to 53 players, despite his $5 million guaranteed salary for 2013 and a $6.875 million cap hit that will stay on the books. The Chargers also will incur a $3.75 million dead-money hit to their 2014 salary cap. Williamson tweeted that the Chargers could save up to $715,000 if the Saints sign Meachem.

Kevin Acee, also of the Union-Tribune, cited a source in early August as saying that Meachem’s body was “broken down.”

If healthy, Meachem could help shore up a Saints receiving corps that lost Joe Morgan for the season with an ACL injury.
