The Buffalo Bills have signed Pro Bowl kicker Dan Carpenter, ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter reported Monday. The Bills made the move after kicker Dustin Hopkins injured his groin in practice on Monday.

Carpenter had spent time with both the New York Jets and Arizona Cardinals this preseason after he was cut by the Miami Dolphins in mid-August. Carpenter lost the competition for the Dolphins’ starting job with fifth-round pick Caleb Sturgis.

Carpenter reached the Pro Bowl in 2009 and holds the Dolphins’ team record with a 60-yard field goal in 2010. He was 22 for 27 on field-goal opportunities last year, but he’s only 10 for 20 in his career from 50 yards and beyond.

According to Mary Cay Kabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Carpenter was on his way to a Tuesday tryout with the Cleveland Browns when he received the news from the Bills.
