The Pittsburgh Pirates have acquired first baseman Justin Morneau from the Minnesota Twins in a waiver trade for 28-year-old outfielder Alex Presley, according to multiple reports.

The 32-year-old Morneau is hitting .259 this season with 17 home runs — including 10 since the All-Star break — and 74 RBI. Pittsburgh had been linked to Morneau since before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, looking to boost an offense that ranks 10th in the National League in runs per game.

The Pirates can plug Morneau, a four-time All-Star and 2006 AL MVP who has battled concussion symptoms and other injuries, in at first base and move Garrett Jones to a corner outfield spot opposite recently acquired right-handed hitter Marlon Byrd.

Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal first reported the news.

The Pirates will also send a player to be named later or cash to Minnesota, according to CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman.

Presley, a seldom-used outfielder who the Pirates drafted in the eighth round in 2006, is hitting .264 with two home runs in 29 games this season and .261 with a .718 OPS for his career.

Looking to make the playoffs for the first time since 1992, Pittsburgh moved into a tie for first place in the NL Central with a victory over the Cardinals on Friday.

Great pickup by the Pirates, Morneau's contract is up at the end of this year so if he's not a fit Pittsburgh aren't on the hook for empty years. It's really too bad the concussion issue has essentially ruined Morneau's career, in 834 games between 2005-10 he had an OPS of .875, he never should have won the MVP but he was a top notch middle of the order hitter.

Indians pick up superstar Jason Kubel (hitting 220 with five - count em - five home runs, Pirates get a true superstar for next to nothing.  Go Tribe, right out of the playoffs.

Good pick up.  Solid pro, won't duplicate his numbers from yrs ago, but he's a good pro...

@WarrenTwocock   Morneau had a .321 BA with 34 HRs and 130 RBIs.  That is why he was the MVP.  You're probably just a disgruntled Yankee fan who thinks a Yankee should get bonus points for wearing the pinstripes.

@RonBing Kubel has more homers over the past 6 seasons than Morneau and their RBI and OPS numbers are almost the same, Morneau hasn't been a superstar for quite awhile.

@JohnStevens @WarrenTwocock Wow, batting average and RBIs in an MVP discussion, how quaint. Look at the numbers posted by Ortiz, Haffner, Dye and tell me how Morneau was the MVP ? He didn't even have the best year on his own team, Mauer was better, but yes he ultimately robbed Jeter, who will have to deal with it when he's in the Hall of Fame while Morneau will have to pay the admission fee to visit.
