New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez is officially listed as day-to-day and will not play in the team’s preseason finale against the Philadelphia Eagles, the Jets announced Sunday.

Sanchez suffered a right-shoulder injury in Saturday night’s preseason game against the New York Giants, after he was  hit hard by Giants defensive tackle Marvin Austin. He stayed down in obvious pain and left the game.

The team didn’t provide more specifics as to the severity of the injury.

Jets head coach Rex Ryan faced criticism after the game for putting Sanchez into the game in the fourth quarter — especially since Sanchez was playing with the Jets’ backups. He appeared surprised when he was called on to enter the game, and according to multiple reports, he was not expecting to play heading into the game.

After the game, Ryan said it was his decision to play Sanchez.

“It was very unfortunate that Mark was injured,” Ryan told reporters after the game, according to USA Today. “When we had a chance to put Mark in, I wanted to play Mark. It’s my decision. [...] I understand being second-guessed when an injury happens, but that’s football.”

Sanchez completed 5 of 6 passes for 72 yards on Saturday. He also lost a fumble.

The Jets haven’t announced a starter between Sanchez and rookie Geno Smith ahead of the team’s season-opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sept. 8. Smith struggled during his start on Saturday, completing 16 of 30 passes for 199 yards, while racking up one touchdown and three interceptions.

Will Sanchez ever be able to throw a football as well as he pushes a lawnmower or bends a taco

Rex Ryan is the biggest moron in coaching I've ever seen.

I like Rex Ryan. He's a very good defensive coordinator. I love his bravado, although he's toned t down a lot. But as a head coach, he gets my preseason bonehead award.

He can spin the rationale for Sanchez being in the game all he wants. But there was no reason. Geno Smith was exposed as not being ready for prime time and you put your week one starter in behind 2nd, 3rd, and dudes trying to make the team OLine? That's idiotic.

The Jets are, at this point, one of the dumbest ran franchises in the NFL. which means they've passed up the Raiders, Chargers, and take your pick on the last one.

That settles it - I'm going heavy on the Jets this week.

HAH...the Jets missed their best chance for winning anytime soon, when they wasted last year, not playing Tebow.  Say what you will about the kid, he wins a lot more than he loses...and the Jets have been losing a lot of games, for years.

I could not care less about their fortunes...they're just bad enough to make one sorry for them.  Were I a Jets fan, what I'd be most concerned about is, the organization's total lack of plan, moving forward.  I wonder...in 2063, will the Jets last Lombardi Trophy still be their first?

Jets = Cubs?!?

Can someone figure out exactly how many real quarterbacks there are in the AFC East? Because, counting Tannehill, I get two.

Look at the shape of Geno Smith's head and tell me it shouts intelligence and leadership. Peanut head cannot remember anything with a dome like that.

Is Derrick Rose still year to year with his 2012 injury?

@Holden

Did you miss Tebows last game with  the Pats, a 0 QB rating.

@Holden Tebow?  The guy that has regressed so much since college that scouts are saying he can't play in any level or pro football in the US or Canada?  The Jets last year with Sporano as OC? With the worst OL in football? The worst running game in football? And don't  forget due to injuries the worst WR in football?  The fact that Sanchez got them to 6 wins was a small miracle.

@NY NBK Far Superior @Rickapolis Yeah really surprised how bay tannehill has looked so far.  Sanchez is completing 65% of his passes and has led the Jets to 37 points...say what you will but he seems to be taking to Marty's offense.
