The Buffalo Bills will sign 30-year-old quarterback Matt Leinart after working him out on Sunday, reports Fox Sports 1′s Mike Garafalo.

The news comes on the heels of injuries to Buffalo’s top two quarterbacks, first-round pick E.J. Manuel, who is recovering from minor knee surgery, and veteran Kevin Kolb, who suffered a head injury during Saturday’s preseason game.

Former Redskins second-round pick John Beck also worked out with the Bills and was expected to work out for the Jets along with Leinart.

Before the signing , Buffalo was left with only undrafted rookie Jeff Tuel at quarterback.

Leinart, the 10th overall pick in the 2006 draft after a storied career at USC, wrote on Twitter that he was “excited” to join the Bills.

In parts of six seasons with the Cardinals, Texans and Raiders, he has posted a 70.2 quarterback rating, completing 57.1 percent of his passes and throwing for 15 touchdowns and 21 interceptions.

Last season with Oakland, he filled in for an injured Carson Palmer during a Week 16 game against the Panthers and completed 16 of 32 passes for 115 yards in his only extended action of the year.

You know you're screwed when you have to sign this guy.

You mean EJ Manuel is injured.

THIS IS MY SHOCKED FACE

I asked this on another post, so pardon me for repeating, but how many quarterbacks, I mean real NFL caliber quarterbacks, are there in the AFC East? Because I see only two, and that's counting Ryan Tannehill. Bill Belichick must laugh himself to sleep every night.

Matt has this critics to be sure, but I think that he can not only play at the NFL level but he can start. He's better than Kolb to begin with (Kevin doesn't even want to play in the first place). People forget that Leinart was an effective QB when Denny Green coached the Cardinals, but was banished to the dog house under the micro-managerial tendencies of the soon-to-be-shi*-canned Kevin Whisenhunt (who Big Ben ran out of Steeltown for the same reason). If Leinart wins 6 games for the Bills he should be a Pro Bowl selection.

Look at Leinart's  record, he is a loser. Coach Ken Whisenhunt* traded/dumped him because he lacked any kind of drive or true interest in the game. Nothing but a playboy looking for a contract.

I feel sorry for Buffalo.

They could have had the new and (hopefully) improved Vince Young.  Instead, they get Leinart and VY found the perfect situation in Green Bay.

Mark Sanchez has had a better career than Leinart.

Booty was probably the weakest of the group. I don't even know if he's in the league anymore.

@Mark112  Dude, he got benched by Green. More than once. Never heard of an effective qb being benched....  And rip Whisenhunt all day long. Fact remains, Leinart was the starter. Had it handed to him. And he played so badly that they brought in Kurt Warner, who led the team to the Super Bowl. So Leinart had a Super Bowl caliber team...and STILL sucked.

@Larry39

You and Whisenhunt don't like Leinart because he gets more chicks than you two do. The Cardinals should have kept both Leinart and Dennis Green

@j7apple That and it is Buffalo. Nobody with a promising career wants to play for Buffalo.

@Ciscos Booty was out of the league when Farve went to the Vikings. Easily the weakest of the group.

Leinart was a rookie and with all rookies there is a learning curve. Second Kurt Warner was already on the team. Third, Leinart got injured and was done for the season when Warner came in and took over. Lastly, Whisenhunt didn't like Leinart - and it was from more than just football.

Yup. The team Greene put together was a Super Bowl caliber team. Too bad Whisenhunt came in and ran them into the dirt afterwards.

@Mel

Even before he takes his first snap from center for the Bills, Leinart is already the second best quarterback in the division.

@Mark112 Love Dennis Green, but.... Remind me which coach got the team to the Super Bowl, Whisenhunt or Green. And did so with Leinart where he belongs. Holding the starter's water cup.

@Mark112 @Larry39 .  Leinart is now past puberty at 30 years old. Wake up and smell the jock strap Markie boy.

@Will4~  No why? Because an adult acts like they're a child and is called on it - is that something that's offensive to you???  Your post doesn't even make sense.  Go find another post to complain about.

@nycsteelersfan~ a fool? Lol I'll address that my friend in a minute.

What's clear is your reading and comprehension ability are sorely lacking.  Did I say Wezzee didn't give him a chance or did I say Wezzee came in and ostracized Leinart from the start?  I don't have to make this argument to prove my point, because the history of Wezzee's comments are out there.  What is also clear is your football IQ pigeonholes your Techmo Bowl education and Madden collection understanding. What's clear is you probably never played the game beyond Pop Warner or was at best a very average player in high school.  I doubt you coached anything significant beyond positional coaching in the youth leagues. Why do I say this? Because you neither understand the game, player or coach psychology.  Your post says as much.

Even a high school coach knows you don't walk into a program as the new face and bad mouth the presumptive incumbent QB or any other player. Second, to remind you how bright Wezzee was, Leinart "clearly" out performed Anderson his last preseason appearance in a Cardinal uniform, that even Cardinal fans who had been lukewarm to Leinart were upset, angry and confused as to why Leinart was shown the door after outplaying Anderson.  Wezzee spun it the way that suited him best.  BTW, even sports analyst didn't understand how that happened. But it did.

Now you take that nugget and combine it with how the Cardinals performed the following season and thereafter. Teams that go to the Super Bowl and lose, usually come back even more motivated, not go downhill. That's what the Cardinals did. Personally I'm glad they fired him - and I'm not even a Cardinals fan.

Now I can see being a steeler fan you probably have some residual love for Wezzee because "he led" the Steelers to the Super Bowl.  Wezzee did? I'm sorry, in the history of the NFL when has a coordinator "led" any team to the Super Bowl. The head coach, right or wrong, gets that credit - and the ax.  Now before you feebly try to educate me on who actually coaches vs who doesn't  -  take a deep breath and hold it... Hold it.... Hold it... Ok breathe.  I know who actually coaches and if you wanna give Wezzee the credit for leading Pitt, then give him the credit for Arizona's fast collapse into obscurity.

As for being a fool? I don't think so. The only fool was you trying to defend a coach who can't be defended. " You are what your record says you are." which is precisely why Wezzee isn't the head coach at Arizona anymore.

@Ciscos @Mel Do you have something against Kindergarteners? Is that like an insult to you, to call someone a small child? Do you go down to the local school at recess and mock all the children?

@Mel @Ciscos yeah but wisenhunt took them to a super bowl and they beat eagles and panthers on the way to the game.  Ken wisenhunt also took steelers offense to the super bowl and they won.  @ciscos you can't say wisenhunt didnt like leinart, he threw but to throw and when you throw like that you throw interceptions plus dude aint got no feet so he need a pro bowl line that will give him all the lords time to throw can't react to pressure only looked good when he beat a brady quinn notre dame team in last minute but he didn't deserve to win but and only then he reach the national championship to look like a scrub with vince young dominating.  ALSO you tried to prove and you try to pass but all teams tryna win the super bowl and all coaches tryna keep their job AND win the super bowl.  to say that wisenhunt didn't give lienart a chance straight up ludacris.  why coach or play BUT to win wisenhunt no lie like other coaches was tryna WIN.  lienart was the one that helped the Bears that famous monday night game he lose himself as a qb and they ate him up.  with lienart he the type of qb is what you have and what you have is not a winner.

Ciscos
Ciscos

@Mel @Ciscos ~ No, but someone who appreciates someone that doesn't talk from their butt cheeks flapping together.  1. Who was Leinart's original backup? 2. Leinart wasn't "HANDED THE STARTING JOB TWICE" lil fella. Wezee came in and ostracized Leinart from day one. For a new HC coming into an organization, you don't start off ostracizing your QBs.  Not that Wezee was that bright anyway by bringing in Derek "Can't hit a barn sideways" Anderson to be his guy.

And No you didn't say who put the team together, I did.

Time for you to graduate from Kindergarten.

Mel
Mel

@Ciscos  Sorry man but Warner was signed AFTER Leinart was drafted. As an insurance policy, due to Leinarts play. And being that Leinart was handed the starting job TWICE by Whisenhunt, I'd say the dislike was football related, as in his play SUCKED.

And I didn't say who put together the Super Bowl caliber team. What I said was....Leinart had a Super Bowl caliber team around him and STILL sucked.

 Who are you? Leinart's daddy?

@Mark112 @Mel lol he's not even the second best QB on the team. You realize he was cut by the Raiders right? The team that is going to start Terell Pryor in their final preseason game?
