Report: Dwight Howard required Lakers to fire Mike D’Antoni, ‘muzzle’ Kobe Bryant

Dwight Howard reportedly made firing Mike D’Antoni and “muzzling” Kobe Bryant prerequisites for him to re-sign. (Noah Graham/Getty Images)

Dwight Howard told the Lakers that firing head coach Mike D’Antoni and using the amnesty clause on — or at least “muzzling” — Kobe Bryant were “prerequisites” for him to remain in Los Angeles, CSN Bay Area’s Ric Bucher is reporting.

The Lakers responded by asking Howard to be patient and “gut this out” for another year, according to the report.

Howard, whose displeasure with playing for D’Antoni and alongside Bryant has been widely reported, eventually signed a four-year, $88-million deal with the Houston Rockets.

From Bucher’s report:

The Lakers apparently asked Dwight to be patient on both fronts for at least another season, telling him “hey, you’re going to have to gut this out another year,” a source said, although it sounds as if VP of basketball ops Jim Buss isn’t ready to abandon Kobe anytime soon. “Dwight didn’t want to play with Kobe for 2-3 more years,” Buss said. “I’m going to stand behind Kobe because of his history with the franchise.”

Howard, in the final conversations before leaving for Houston, didn’t specifically tell the Lakers that if coach Mike D’Antoni was fired he’d stay and the Lakers never made the offer to do so if it would convince Howard to re-up.

I also had a hell of a lot more respect fro both Dwight and Lebron before they left to seek titles.  Truly amazing how each of them carried their respective teams to the NBA finals and a shame neither could pull off the championship.

Sometimes a locker room cancer is right.  Can't say that I question Dwight for wanting either of those to happen.

Howard may be the most high-maintenance player in the league.  Good luck to the Rockets because I don't think he's worth the trouble.

They're also cool to look at, though in truth, Gila Monsters don't do much but eat bugs,
produce poison spit and just hang out. And apparently the spit cures diabetes.

I'm not a Howard fan.  The games I saw him play last year he looked like a BUM.  Some people putting the numbers together say he had a good year.  I looked at the other centers in the playoffs and they all looked better than him.  They got rid of 2 BUM centers.  I say LA is better off without him but they don't have much of a plan for the future . . . like say Boston has.

Can you imagine a fickle center so intimidated by a legendary guard, that he tries to get ownership to muzzle their FIVE TIME CHAMPION on his unproven behalf?

Ok I have been asked why Howard shouldn't been allowed to make demands. Here is my answer in order to make demands you have to show what you are worth. People say that Kobe was the reason for shag leaving I don't know how true that  is. Do I think he played a part yes I do. Ok now here is the point of what I'm trying to make. Shag and Kobe has rings. They went their on way and still got rings. Howard hasn't got there yet. Plus I think Shag was better then Howard now that's just my opinion but rings tell it all.  Look last year we seen a Howard that just wasn't all that to me. Free throws was horrible his game was off he just didn't show up.

Until Howard wins a title then he doesn't have a right to talk. Just play ball and win then go from there. Play and win then give a team a reason to listen to you.

The head case will at some point want McHale out, Harden amnestied. Nothing has changed, can't win a championship in Orlando, can't win one in LA, the problem is not where he is playing it is where his head is.

I highly doubt Dwight will ever win a championship unless he comes to grips with the fact that he's not a leader and can eat being second in command.  He wants to be 'he man' but he lacks what it takes to be 'the man'.  He doesn't want to play with 5-time NBA champion, Kobe Bryant.  Playing ball with Kobe for a year or two would be one of the best things for Dwight., he'd get a clear understanding of what it takes to be a champion.

father time will get kobe just like it did jordan and EMBARASS him. the young'uns (like al bundy used to call 'em) will make fun of kobe like they did of jordan and want him out of the league.

Funny that KObe is so clueless he thought he could convince Dwight to stay, when in reality Dwight could not stand him.  Not many players want to play with Kobe, he is way too selfish.

As good as he is, the trouble with Howard is that he wanted the Lakers to choose him over Kobe. Whether you love or hate Kobe, the fact stands that he has done a lot for the franchise. One can criticize his shot selection, his ego; but his competitive spirit -- the grit to play play through pain -- cannot be questioned. I would think the Lakers organization value that. As for Howard, the best he can offer is a promise yet to be fulfilled based on his tremendous potential. And he pushed the Lakers to choose between him and Kobe. That tells me Howard doesn't have either humility or perspective. If he did, he wouldn't have made such demands. He ought to know better that the time will come when he's no longer a team's cornerstone. What goes around comes around.

Sounds like Howard has been hanging out with Lamar Odom, because if he thought that was going to happen, he must be high.. Howard will be dead in a couple months anyway when he gets carjacked by some displaced New Orleans native who now calls Houston his drug empire..

Kobe doesn't want to win unless he gets to be finals MVP.  Having six titles but only to finals MVP's is a threat to his legacy he won't accept.

Hey guys, enough about Dwight Howard and the Lakers. Let's talk about the Utah Jazz.

This is crazy thing for Dwight to do. My thing lets just say Kobe was out of line for saying what he said to Howard. To me what Howard should have done was put Kobe in his place. Not try and tell the owners to make him shut up and fire the head coach when you haven't proved yourself on this team. Howard can say what he want about Kobe and maybe Kobe is hard to work with, but he has the rings to back up what he is saying. Last year was train wreck for Howard so trying to make demands should have been the last thing to. do

eddie767
eddie767

This really shouldn't suprise anyone,if true. Kobe doesn't want to share and D12 thinks he can do it alone. Those 4 yrs are going to be the worst yrs in Rocket history, and they've had some bad ones. Dwight takes all the credit and dishes the blame. If his game doesn't get better by being around 3 HOF'ers(Mchale, the Dream,Ralph Sampson),his sorry tail better move to Hollywood to be a C list star.

Buh-bye. Brought nothing to the team. Maybe he should have listened to a thing or two Mamba had to say.

Dwight Howard is a baby.  I hope he never wins a championship.  He doesn't deserve it.

Papi Del Negro..... Dont ask
Papi Del Negro..... Dont ask

Why is this even a story? Seems to me since everyone knows the Lakers are going to be bad this year, the media has to come up with stories just so people dont forget about this forgetable team we re about to see this season.

Dwight Howard is a train wreck and has proven it time and time again. Being in Houston won't change that. The guy will NEVER be an NBA champion. Houston is happy now but as soon as the season starts and the drama/emo/freakshow that is Dwight Howard is in full effect then they will all be angry and then D12 will blame anyone and everyone for another disaster season.

doublejtrain68

All Dwight can do is count his money, because he won't even sniff a title with the Rockets. There are several teams in the West that are better than them, and any top team in the East would sweep them. Six bucks and my left nostril says he will be throwing his teammates and the coaches under the bus late in the season.

Jim Buss says that Howard never was Lakers material! If so, why wasn't the Blake Griffin, Eric Bledsoe for Howard trade done. The Lakers would be lookin' pretty with an athletic big and a young explosive point guard instead of pining over lost shot blocking! All of the future Griffin highlights could have been Lakers legacy. Besides, Griffin has Hollywod appeal-Lakers stock! Lost opportunity Buss has not owned up to. Now the Lakers have just talk! Got to be able to out-think the rest of the league!

@superboofer Hey I have a riddle, whose the only player in NBA history to shoot 20+ times a game for 13 straight years, and NEVER shoot over 46% in ANY of those 13 years????? Ill give you a hint, its not Dwight Howard.

@jasonxp Yeah, curious to see how Trey Burke would go.

Will4

@arthur9 He was being courted by every NBA team who had enough cap space to get him, so why exactly wasn't he in a position to make demands?

If the Lakers didn't feel the most sought after free agent this year was in a position to make demands, they probably should have left themselves out of the running.

Maybe you forget Kobe making demands the entire summer of 2007 on radio interviews? Saying he needed a better team or he would demand a trade. He was already signed and being paid millions by the team. The team he couldn't get out of the first round, after he ran one of the greatest centers in NBA history out of town.

He won 3 titles, largely because of Shaq, said Shaq had to go, then cried because while Shaq was winning another title, he was losing in the first round. All while he was under contract. He didn't say, "im supposed to be the star, its my team, i need to do better." He cried all summer about not having enough around him.

Will4
Will4

@ggqueenbee Yeah I'm sure "Mamba" was always giving him sage advice. You know how great of a teammate Kobe is and how he loves giving others advice.

Will4

Exactly. The front running Laker fans don't even like to mention their team when they aren't contending, why should any of us care?

Lizard_King

Howard led the league in rebounding last year and was top 10 in FG% .....despite Kobe not passing him the ball he had a good year.  Kobe on the other hand took more shots than anyone else in the league (again) and was 151st in FG%.  You'd be pissed too if you were Howard....even though you're both idiots....you'd be right.

Will4
Will4

@icedeal He wasn't signed, to do that they would have needed to execute a sign and trade. The only reason Howard would have agreed to that is if the Clippers were his top choice (they couldn't sign him any other way). He had 5-6 other good teams battling for him, he could have easily just chosen the Rockets over the Clippers, making the sign and trade impossible.

Hampton180
Hampton180

@icedeal That trade was rumored but the Clippers continued to shoot it down.  I think it would've been made in a heartbeat if it was true.

@Lizard_King Good point, although Dwight was a very close 2nd in FG percentage, not just top 10. over 17 PPG on 10 shots a night.

Also, even though Kobe jacked up his obligatory 20+ (17 for KD), and had over 100 players shoot better than him, he did have close to his most efficient shooting year of his career, so we should give him credit, no matter how sad it is that this below average shooting year is one of his best of his career.

I just don't want people to think he used to make shots, and now he's just old. He's never broken the 47% barrier. The barrier than Lebron has broken 9 years in a row. So LBJ is unquestionably a more efficient scorer, but I'm sure Kobe does the other things better. I'm sure he's a way better passer, rebounder, and defender....

J Taylor
J Taylor

@Will4 @Lizard_King

HUH?

When you dunk, and play small ball your efficiency and % will be up. Let's talk about metrics that matter: 39% Field Shooting, 38% three point. 89% free throw.

Lebron isn't anywhere near those numbers, and neither is D12. But you can get stuck on the "47%" barrier and think about guys like Bynum who easily break that barrier because they don't shoot.

Will4
Will4

@Bogesz j @Lizard_King Yeah, because Kobe neeevvvvveeerrrr got pissed before those 5 rings right??

He didn't cry until they made Shaq leave did he?

He didn't cry all summer in 2007 when Shaq was coming off a title in Miami and he was coming off a first round beating? He didn't do 100 radio interviews saying he'd demand a trade if they didn't improve?

I'm sure he wasn't such a bad teammate in LA that they considered trading him numerous times the first few years of his career, according to Phis Jackson, I'm sure Phil just made that up because Kobe had 0 rings then, I can't imagine he would have cried before winning all 5 titles.
