Vin Scully, the beloved Los Angeles Dodgers broadcaster, will return for a record 65th season, The Los Angeles Times’ Bill Shaikin reported Thursday.

Scully, 85, and the Dodgers officially announced the move Friday.

Scully has taken the decision to return on a season-by-season basis. He has now decided he can handle another year as announcer.

CHEN: Braun’s apology is too little and too late

From Shaikin’s report:

“It has been such an exciting, enjoyable, wonderful season — the big crowds in the ballpark, everybody is talking about the ball club, and I really respect, admire and love the management — so everything just fell into place,” Scully said.

“I really still enjoy it immensely. My health is good, thank God. So why not? And my wife said, ‘Why not?’ as well.

“Just the thought of walking away from it to retirement — and looking out the window or something? It’s just too good. As a baseball man, and someone who has always loved the game, the situation and the conditions are perfect.”

65 years of watching the Dodgers sounds like a prison term to me; oh the horror!

Good for you Vinny. Do it as long as you can.

I'd rather listen to Vin Scully call the game than watch it myself. He's by far the best I've ever heard.

Most impressive is the fact that he is the ONLY one left who broadcasts the games solo.  No sidekick, no color analyst, no stat boy.  Just mellifluous stories.  I never get tired of listening to him.  Is there a better way for an East Coaster to drift off to sleep than by listening to his call?

Best baseball broadcaster ever... Hell! Maybe even the best sports broadcaster ever!..

If science ever comes up with an anti-aging immortality serum, I vote give it to Vin Scully first. Not only does no other broadcaster come close to Vinnie's mastery of calling a game, no one even attempts to copy his style. Great broadcaster, great American.

He is the best as an announcer and a man.  His voice always brings me back to my childhood when my father loathed the Dodgers and my mom loved them.  I was and still am on her side.

Simply an amazing broadcaster! Not like many of the other broadcasters who are homers and who tend to politicize their broadcasts. Vin will obviously talk about the Dodgers but will not be afraid to talk about the "other" team. He also paints a picture for his listening audience by describing what he sees.

Great news and may you have another couple of years to broadcast baseball.

@MaryBuhr @dgriffith Mary, with all respect to Bob Uecker--he's a fine broadcaster, a favorite of  mine--but he's no Vin Scully, not even close.
