Report: Angels to part with either Mike Scioscia or GM Jerry Dipoto

The Angels are going to part ways with either manager Mike Scioscia or general manager Jerry Dipoto after the season, Jon Morosi of FOXSports.com reports.

Morosi cites “philosophical differences” between the two.

Dipoto has made headlines in his two offseasons with the Angels, signing Albert Pujols, C.J. Wilson and Josh Hamilton to mammoth contracts of $240, $77.5 and $125 million, respectively.

Those three acquisitions haven’t worked out for the Angels, who are 18.5 games back in the American League West. Pujols is out for the year after hitting a career-low .258. Wilson is 13-6 with a 3.30 ERA and Hamilton is hitting .229 with 126 strikeouts to 36 walks. The three players have a combined 4.7 Wins Above Replacment — per Pro Baseball Reference — which is far below the value of Mike Trout, who is making $501,000 this season and is valued at 7.4 WAR.

JAFFE: Scioscia not to blame for Angels struggles

Scioscia has managed the Angels since 2000. They’ve been to the playoffs six times under his rule, winning the World Series in 2002. The Angels haven’t made the postseason since 2009.

In 2009, Scioscia and the Angels agreed on a 10-year contract. Dipoto is working on a contract that has one more guaranteed year left.

You need to find out who had the bright idea to sign Pujols and Hamilton.   Fire that person.

I know it may seem mean spirited, but I love when some team pays someone an outrageous salary, and then that player tanks!  You could bring up minor leaguers who could hit 229, and not pay them over $100 M either.  Way to tank, Angels!

im sure Arte is the one who wanted Hamilton.

Scioscia needs to go. Now, they should of moved Bourjos for pitching in offseason and kept Trout in center ad let Morales play his contract out as his bat is missed.  Picking up two scrubs, Blanton and Hanson didnt help.

But, it is time for Mike to go. He has a coaching staff of yes men. Team runs the bases like a little league team. Mike never learns from his mistakes on managing the pitching staff. against complete games, takes out a reliever after a 1,2,3 inning for for a closer who has been rocked. He has no feel for the game. Francona should of been hired last year. How many years is the Angels going to have high expectations and Mike is not held accountable?

if they let Trout get away they're worse than most believe. I must admit they're off to a good start at losing him, giving him a measly raise after an historic rookie year. He'll be a Yankee yet.

I say they sign the next big free agent to a 50 year, $1 trillion dollar deal.  What could possibly go wrong?

Doesn't much matter which they get rid of.  The organization is STILL going to be saddled with those giant contracts (and likely unable to retain Trout long-term because of it).

You will still need to have those contracts produces. This is funny to me. If those guys were doing what they were supposed to do, all would be lollipops and gum drops in HaloVille... Now because the players who are still underachieving, will still get paid. I say you all ride it out and see who faints first. First to faint, that's who gets the AXE! Ha!

I've said it time and time before, Jerry is the problem, not Mike.

I just hope the Angels play this bad for years to come

DiPoto did not urge the signings of Pujols and Hamilton, it was Arte Moreno!

I'm a diehard Angels fan and I've seen plenty of poor decisions made my Scioscia over the past 5 years, it's time for a change of leadership.

If JeDi goes and Scioscia stays, does that mean Mickey Hatcher gets his old job back?  I hope JeDi gets replaced with Kim Ng.

How about parting ways with both

@Merv As much as many fans of sports franchises would love to over the years, you can't fire a team owner.

@drbcool Being from Jersey it's likely he grew up as a Yankee fan, so he would probably be gone no matter what the Angels do/did regarding contract. I doubt he signs an extension with the Angels

DiPoto stunk when he was acting GM in Arizona. 86 him and keep Scioscia.

Good thought. Ms. Ng has paid her dues and is VERY qualified.
