Rookie quarterback Geno Smith will start the New York Jets’ preseason game against the Giants on Saturday, coach Rex Ryan told reporters Thursday. The New York Daily News‘ Manish Mehta reported Tuesday that Smith was expected to start.

Smith and Mark Sanchez have been competing for the team’s starting spot, but neither has done enough to claim the job.

Sanchez has been capable in the preseason but hasn’t shown any marked improvement. Smith, the team’s second-round pick, would seem to offer more upside. There has been speculation the Jets prefer for Smith to win the starting job sooner than later.

NFL.com’s Dan Hanzus reported earlier this month that the Jets starter in Saturday’s game would  “likely”  be the quarterback to open the regular season. The third preseason game is traditionally the most important, and teams often use it as a sort of dress rehearsal for the regular season. But Ryan said Thursday, “Right now is not the appropriate time to name a starter (for the regular season).”

Smith, the former West Virginia star, completed 6 of 7 passes for 47 yards against the Lions in New York’s first preseason game. He missed the team’s second game with an ankle injury. The rookie from West Virginia is reportedly healthy again and will have a chance to make a strong impression at a critical time in the quarterback competition.

...or Sanchez...

THIS is why the Jets should have given Tebow some starts, last season.  Sanchez wasn't the answer, last year, and playing the kid who BEAT you, in stunning fashion, just made sense.  Now, the Jets are stuck having to scour the waiver wire for a quarterback.  This much is for sure...the Jets would be in better shape with Tebow, right now, than they are with either Smith.

Bit of important trivia for all you NFL trivia buffs.

Geno Smith won his high school's ugly man award 5 years in a row.

Geno Smith starting in the whole scheme of things means nothing.  It doesn't signal he's beat Sanchez out and it doesn't mean that he's the Jets savior either.  What we will get to see is Smith's running ability. Giants DLine>Jets OLine.

It's not possible that he is worse than Sanchez. They could start a bowl of lime green jello and get more production out of it than Dirty Sanchez.

@boone51 Nah.  The lime green stuff gets too runny the minute it gets warm, and we all know there's no future for a quarterback who tucks and runs too quickly.  Now...if we were talking Black Cherry...now there's a jello that will stand in there and stand up to whatever you toss at it.  I know that's not a Jets' color, but Black Cherry could easily win the starting spot.
