Major League Baseball has suspended Red Sox starting pitcher Ryan Dempster five games and an undisclosed fine for intentionally throwing at and hitting Alex Rodriguez on Sunday, the league announced Tuesday afternoon.

Dempster became the first pitcher to be accused of throwing at Rodriguez following his 211-game suspension for allegedly using performance-enhancing drugs and tampering with MLB’s investigation into the Biogenesis scandal. Rodriguez is playing for the Yankees during his appeal process.

Rodriguez led off the top of the second inning against Ryan Dempster. This GIF shows Dempster’s first pitch sail behind Rodriguez’s legs. Dempster’s fourth pitch hit Rodriguez in the left elbow.

VERDUCCI: Alex Rodriguez’s battles have just begun

After home plate umpire Brian O’Nora warned both benches, Yankees manager Joe Girardi charged out of the dugout and demonstrably argued with O’Nora over his handling of the incident. Girardi was eventually ejected.

In his third at-bat, Rodriguez led off the sixth inning with a solo home run off Dempster.

Girardi was also fined an undisclosed amount for his actions.

But I guess if your going to BAN PETE ROSE for life for betting on Baseball while he was MANAGING NOT while he was PLAYING and NEVER betting against his team then we should not expect to much from the POWERS THAT BE in MLB

5 game suspension is really just a 1 game suspension for a Pitcher. What is MLB thanking or NOT thanking? Is this some kind od JOKE?

I kind of find the Yankees side..Girardi... a bit hypocritical.  As a catcher it is practically certain that he's been involved in intentional hits before.  In fact, while he is complaining, it is very likely that at some point his team will do the same back to a Red Sox player and claim the same...just throwing inside defense.

Dempster, classic dumb hoser. Manages to make A-Rod look sympathetic. And shouldn't he be playing hockey, eh?

This is starting to remind me of Sean Avery returning from suspension for the "sloppy seconds" episode. The officials made it pretty obvious it was open season on him and opponents knew they could do whatever without consequence. No love for Arod or the Yanks, but this is a dangerous situation.

Tbh he should be banned for the rest of the season, but that would help the Red Sux a bit too much.

HE shouldn't miss more than 1 inning.  It's called justice, and should continue to be executed by pitchers facing the Yankees.

Once he missed with the first pitch he should of moved on.  MLB should move his hearing up if they have all this info on A- Roid.  Love the game but who are we kidding the game will always be dirty until they put a life ban for this junk.  There will always be someone trying to get over on the game for their own greed.  Don't like it.

Can't understand why the highest paid player would need to take peds.  He may have tons of money, but now he just seems like a sociopath.

Any pitcher who beans Arod should be rewarded, not punished.

A five game suspension is a joke with a $2500 fine. That is one start. They should suspend pitchers differently then position players. A pitcher should be suspended x amount of starts versus games. I am not defending Arod but hitting him on the fourth time is Bush league. If you dont hit him on the first attempt get back into the game and respect it.

I'm not a Red Sox fan, but I'm just saying, if there's any poetic irony left in this world, MLB should allow Dempster to continue playing until his appeal gets heard by arbitration ;-D

Not defending  A-Rod, but the umpire was pretty stupid to throw out the manager and let the offended pitcher stay in the game, since it was obvious he was aiming to hit the batter.  If umps don't keep the game under control we are going to see worse things then this happen in the future.

Totally worth it for Dempster. And I say that as a huge Yankees fan. I wish one pitcher from every team would bean him. Maybe he'd get the point that NO ONE wants him on the field and in baseball.

What a joke MLB has become!  ARod out and out cheats, and gets to play through a fictitious appeal and a guy hits him on his elbow pad and gets suspended.  The Yankees, a once great organization, has become the laughing stock of baseball.  Sure, the league says he can play, but it is up to Girardi and the Yankee front office whether of not he is in the line-up.  Lost all respect for Girardi, and all the players who came to his defense after he got hit.  He is selfish.  He is arrogant.  He is a cheat...period!  In a year the focus and publicity should be on a classy player like Rivera, A-Rod comes back and does everything he can to say....."look at me!!  look at me!"  I wish Jeter would come forward and show the class of who he is, to tell the Yankees to give ARod a seat.  Does it really mean that much Yankee fans to be 4th instead of 5th.  Sad.

If I heard right and this jerk got suspended 5 days WITH  PAY  that tells me that the league is doing it's best to put the screws to AROD anytime they can.   Dumpster who is currently a weak #5 in the Sox rotation has to sit a whole five days and then have to take money for doing that !    Wish my parents had been as tough as MLB when I was growing up !   I may hate AROD but that was a pretty gutless thing to throw at him (4x) considering the only backlash would be for Pedroia or Papi to get nailed when they see the Yanks again. . .They should make pitchers bat once in a while so they remember what the game is really like.

Does anyone else get the irony here?

OK Dumpster fans lets see if he appeals the 5 game suspension, just like A-Rod has the same rights to appeal.........

Was Dumpster on the Cubs at the same time as Sammy 'corked bat' Sosa?? Did he maybe hit Sosa with a wet towel in the shower for being a user?

who do the Yanks think they are...Tom Brady?

DumbDadNU87

since he's probably released as soon as Buchholz gets off the DL, and Workman's starts have been as good or better then Dempster's anyway he may be done in a Boston uniform

Gee, I sure hope this doesn't hurt Dumpster's chances of winning eight games this season.

Gunga.Galunga

Now the question is, does he accept it like a man, or go the A Roid route and appeal?

mugzbo

Uh, apparently Dempster said he hit A-Rod because A-Rod snubbed him at a public event? He held a grudge about not getting a dap and decided to hit him in a game? Lol, I don't know why he would come out and say that because that makes it pathetic as hell as opposed to him becoming a martyr for plunking him first. Would've been the headline story on TMZ and made for great drama instead!!! :(

@Cinti-fan I don't think his issue was with Arod getting plunked, it was that Dempster didn't get tossed.

@jolivera4304 dumb post since any time someone appeals their suspension/punishment is put on hold until the hearing is concluded.

@jolivera4304 no appeal is being asked for, the guy did something that will finally get his name in the papers and he will gloat as he sits on the bench, acting like a martyr.

@Gunga.Galunga the only person that's gonna be crying is Ortiz when he gets a fastball in the back the next time these two teams meet.

@Gunga.Galunga I'm a Boston fan but Girardi is right, regardless of personal feelings, you don't just randomly throw at a guy. It's a personal attack outside of the confines of the game, with no merit or cause. It was a lame thing to do and served zero purpose aside to putting a guy on base, pissing him off and then watching him rock one into the stands a few at bats later.

altrock1903
altrock1903

@mugzbo not true. dempster would get suspended forever if he came out and said that.

@ChaseWalsh3 @Gunga.Galunga Sure Chase......if your hefty lefty had any balls he would have plunked someone.  Bottom line is.......these Yankee pitchers do not support this cheater enough to throw at someone for him.

@Michael10@altrock1903@Gunga.Galunga think about it, pitchers go every fifth DAY not game. your #1 pitches tues, #2 goes wed. off day thurs #3 goes fri #4 goes sat and #1 goes on his fifth day.  sun. mon off, dempster goes tues. the manager would use these days off to stabilize his rotation anyways.
