New York Jets linebacker Quinton Coples will miss the rest of the preseason and is out indefinitely after suffering a hairline fracture in his ankle Saturday night against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The Jets also said in a statement that Coples will undergo a procedure for his ankle on Tuesday.

“Linebacker Quinton Coples suffered an injured right ankle Saturday night in the Jets’ 37-13 win over Jacksonville at MetLife Stadium,” the team said in the statement. “Coples will undergo a medical procedure on Tuesday. He will miss the remainder of the preseason and is out indefinitely.”

Coples fell awkwardly on his ankle after blocking a pass from Jaguars quarterback Chad Henne, in the second quarter of a preseason game the Jets won handily.

If Coples misses significant time, it could be a big blow to a Jets defense that could use his versatility. The Jets moved him to linebacker in his second season in the NFL. The Jets drafted him 16th overall in last year’s NFL Draft.
