Former University of Texas running back Ricky Williams, who won the 64th Heisman Trophy in 1998, criticized Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel for the way he has handled media attention following his 2012 Heisman victory.

After being introduced as the new running backs coach at the University of the Incarnate Word — a small Catholic school in San Antonio — Williams told Austin’s KEYE-TV, “You know once you win the Heisman Trophy, there’s going to be more attention on you. You are probably not going to be able to get away with all the stuff you got away with before.”

“If the media did their research on who this kid was, nobody would be surprised,” he added.
Manziel has been under intense scrutiny since he burst onto the scene last year, drawing criticism for his partying and more recently facing possible punishment for profiting off of autographs.

Williams drew an incredible amount of attention and bad attention before the era of social media. How often would Williams have been caught taking bong rips at a party like Michael Phelps?  What actions on 6th street would have been of facebook and TMZ the next morning.

I was in college around the other athletes, particularly football players throwing up on fraternity steps and outside bars the night before their pre-season games  (warm ups like Kent State or 1AA schools). I watched fights in dorm quads, a RB slapping a woman in a bar, and these were 1st round picks.

Manziel is being treated like a celebrity and in this new era of celebrity and social media, he is being put under the bright lights of a pro and not being paid to do so. That is what is really wrong with this situation and athletes from previous eras, can't begin to understand the scrutiny that Manziel is under when everything he does, things most other college kids are doing, is posted online the moment he does it.

I'll say this, when you're putting billboards up in Times Square to celebrate some 19 year old, Texas A&M is as culpable as anyone.

Well, at least he didn't have to abdicate his Heisman Trophy like Reggie Bush had to for USC.

@mystafugee and really ask why do they care so much about him winning that individual award - it isn't a team award?

The reality is Manziel is bringing them a fortune right now and he is getting all the downsides of celebrity and very little of the upsides that a pro would get.

@MichaelWallis1 That's whats wrong. Bush, Pryor got caught violating rules. But now that Manziel is under suspicion everyone is defending HIM? How signs hundreds of pictures and football helmuts for free? GTFOH!

What's the difference? I think Bush gave back the Heisman as a diss to college football. It means nothing because college football is itself, one big lie.
