North Carolina athletic director Bubba Cunningham was a guest speaker at a faculty retreat for the school’s journalism department on Thursday when he was asked a question about star P.J. Hairston — whether the indefinitely suspended guard would play this season.

His response:

“Yes. But not all the games.”

That answer hints that Hairston might miss some games this upcoming season. Hairston is suspended indefinitely after having three run-ins with police during the offseason.

Charges of possession of marijuana and driving without a license relating to an arrest at a traffic stop on June 5 were dropped against Hairston last month.

Hairston led North Carolina in scoring with 14.6 points per game last season.

Down here in North Carolina we blame law enforcement whenever a UNC athlete gets in trouble.  If the officer in question at the various events had merely turned his or her head then none of this would have happened.  The team needs PJ.  That is what is important.  His punishment should be that he be suspended from several of his no-show classes.  Do the math on suspension from a no-show class.

As a UNC fan, I can't understand why PJ hasn't been kicked off the team yet.  His initial incident was embarrassment enough for the university, which has already dealt with enough scandal already in the athletic department.  But then, after Roy supposedly had a tough talk with him, he goes and gets a speeding ticket for 93 in a 65, which certainly sounds like PJ's way of giving Roy the finger.  I don't care how good of a shooter he is, I believe he's worn out his benefit of the doubt and is only going to cause more trouble if he stays in the program.

Can anyone do anything in college sports these days that would actually get them kicked off a team.  I guess maybe a bench player with no hope of playing.  Certainly not starters!
