Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Plaxico Burress underwent season-ending — and possibly career-ending — surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff on Monday, ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter reported.

The surgery came the same day Burress turned 36 years old. He injured his shoulder last week when diving to catch a pass. It was reported then Burress was likely facing a season-ending injury.

Burress played in only four games last season in his return to Pittsburgh, with three total catches for 42 yards and a score. He signed back with the Steelers — who drafted him in 2000 — after receiving surprisingly little interest following a solid season with the New York Jets in 2011.

Burress has played in 148 games through an 11-season career with the Steelers, Jets and New York Giants. He has 553 receptions for 8,499 yards and 64 touchdowns. The injury could end a spotlighted career that included a jail stint in 2009 and 2010 on a weapons possession charge.

Dang.  He wasn't around long enough for me to get sick of him.

May want to change it it to "out forever" now.

Let's just call it what it is.  You had a good career, Plaxico.   Not without bumps.  Of course nobody is perfect.  Best of luck in all you do, post football,Plaxico.

This is a real shocker! I watched Burress play for years when he was with the Steelers, and this report that his career may be over is quite surprising. Why, you may ask? Well, it is difficult to recall Burress EVER diving to catch any pass on any occasion. The fact that he finally went for one and had possible career-ending surgery on his 36th birthday, is the height of IRONY! Maybe former Raven, Ray Lewis, was right after all, when he called Burress PLEXIGLASS.

@GumpsterWorsley

I think it was Rocket's brother Qadry that came up with the "Plexiglass" moniker. Ray would probably refer to Plaxico as his "Jailbird Brother."

@GumpsterWorsley And first up, screaming Steeler fan, still pissed that Plaxico Burress won a Super Bowl with the Giants.  Oh, and getting injured on your birthday is irony?   How so?

@doghockey @GumpsterWorsley The surgery was on hisw birthday, the injury occurred prior to his birthday. Good point though, he never had an afnity for diving for receptions

Hey doghockey! Let's agree on this: GO GIANTS! GO STEELERS! GO...LOL...no Plaxico for either team, I suppose.

You misunderstand my post, doghockey. I truly rooted for Plax to have a great Super Bowl because the Giants beat a team that brings nausea to my soul when I even speak their name aloud. As to irony concerning Plax's 36th birthday, think about it! The fact he waited this long to finally make a diving effort this late in his career, only to possibly have it end his career, is the highest form of irony. Does that explanation meet with your approval??? If not, don't jump to childish conclusions before you think things through. Yeah, I'm a Steelers fan in the AFC. Guess who I root for in the NFC? Think...think...starts with a G...almost there....no, not the Geagles....no, not the Gowboys....certainly not the Gedskins......ah, never mind.
