Timberwolves’ Flip Saunders threatens to send Shabazz Muhammad to D-League

Two days after first-round pick Shabazz Muhammad was sent home from the NBA’s Rookie Transition Program, Timberwolves president of basketball operations Flip Saunders said on a Minnesota radio show on Friday that Muhammad could be sent to the Developmental League.

In an interview with KFAN’s Dan Barreiro, Saunders said the news of Muhammad’s rules violation — he was dismissed for having a “female guest” in his hotel room without staff approval — was “disappointing” and implied that he could force Muhammad to play for the Iowa Energy, the Timberwolves’ D-League affiliate.

From ProBasketballTalk:

“In our league, you have to be disciplined and being ‘disciplined’ is being able to adhere to whatever rules are given and you gotta abide by the rules,” Saunders said on the local radio host’s show. “So that’s been disappointing. But when I talk to him, he’s either gonna learn the rules and learn to abide by things with the big boys or he’s gonna really quick learn a geography class: where Des Moines is in the NBDL down in Iowa.”

The 20-year-old Muhammad has been surrounded by controversy since his commitment to UCLA last year.

He was initially ruled ineligible to play because of financial benefits he received while making unofficial visits. He later caused a stir for wearing a Gucci backpack and being a year older than he claimed, and gained a reputation for being selfish, causing his stock to drop from potential top overall pick to mid-first-rounder.

Minnesota acquired the shooting guard/small forward, the 14th pick in the first round, in a draft-day trade that sent their No. 9 pick, point guard Trey Burke, to the Jazz.

MANNIX: Minnesota quiet may be spark to help Muhammad reach potential

These comments are always hilarious.   I'm like one of the writers, the kid gets caught talking to a woman and you want him in the D league.  Amazing.

Flip Saunders is ruining the Wolves  (again) by wasting high draft pick.

So a 20 year old is caught with a female guest in his room - not drugs, not guns, but a female....  And we've already passed judgment and are ready for a lynching, right SI mob?  Yes he has a lot to learn as most 20 year old's do and some time in the NBDL would probably do him well (make him earn his spot on the bench). But lets give the lad a chance to prove his worth before we hang him high for everyone to see.

What's wrong with a Gucci backpack?

This dude is clueless. He has an ego and hasn't proven anything yet. He reminds me of Isiah Rider. He was trouble as soon as he stepped on the court. I wouldn't let his azz anywhere near my team he is a team breaker.

He feels entitled and acts like he's the second coming of an all-time great.

An ego-shattering stint in the D-League might wake him up.

Oh, and get his dad as far away from him as possible.

Everything about this guy has been negative. I'm sure the 'Wolves hope he will 'mature', but I'm afraid they will be waiting in vain. His ego will doom him if his mediocre talent does not. A loser through and through.

i'll never forget he came late to the draft and they introduced him 5 picks later

Got to remember, this azz didn't have any rules at UCLA. He thinks he is the best jig out there and can do no wrong.  And he has loser daddy for back up

Can he play in D league? He could be a bust there too.

These behavioral things DO NOT matter , the only reason Shabazz will land in the D- League is for one reason and one reason only .....

He sucks on the court !!!

Is there really anybody surprised by this?  No, there is not.  Shabazz has been a baggage issue since before he got to UCLA.  Then he lied about his age.  (He's not 19, he's 20).  Then, to the surprise of nobody, he was a "one and done".  How in the world could he be ready for the NBA?  He isn't.  Too many maturity issues, too much of an issue off the court, and now he has money, which will make his problems much worse.  I bet Shabazz Muhammad plays fewer than 200 games in his NBA career, and then goes overseas, never again to play at the level required for the NBA.  If I'm wrong, explain why.

@bjornbonn   scuse me what? Gilbert Arenas was a team first guy and a great teammmate. He made an unfortunate decision to get into it with Javaris Crittendom, a murdering thug.

@badge3832  The one he had cost over $1000, and he didn't declare it as a gift. Teammates were wearing team issued school backpacks at same time.
