With its Heisman-winning quarterback Johnny Manziel in hot water, Texas A&M is going with the same law firm that represented Auburn during an NCAA probe of Cam Newton’s recruitment.

According to Dan Wolken of USA TODAY Sports, Texas A&M has retained Birmingham-based firm Lightfoot, Franklin, Wright LLC. Auburn paid the same firm $170,000 over a four-month span for legal counsel during a 2010 season that saw Newton win the Heisman and lead the Tigers to the BCS Championship.

ESPN’s “Outside The Lines” reported Sunday evening the NCAA is investigating whether Manziel profited off his autograph, citing sources who claim Manziel was paid a five-figure fee for signing memorabilia in January. Doing so would be a violation, per NCAA Bylaw 12.5.2.1, and Manziel could be ruled ineligible for his redshirt sophomore season.

STAPLES: Manziel discussed autograph incident in exclusive interview

As the Aggies opened fall camp Monday, head coach Kevin Sumlin said Manziel would still practice with the team and that the school had limited information.

“We didn’t know anything about this until yesterday,” Sumlin said. “Our University is doing its due diligence to find out the facts. As the facts start to come in, we’ll adjust accordingly.”

And to think some fans of college football thought A&M wouldn't fit in with the SEC....

Is TX&AM starting to wish they never heard of Manziel yet. If this is how he acts in college football, can you imagine how he is gonna be in the NFL. Drama Queen.

If some are saying that this has been a seven month investigation, how is that that Sumlin says they just found out yesterday?

Thanks to the schools of the SEC, this law firm will be set for quite some time. Manziel needs to do some serious growing up, this guy needs to realize that NFL teams are being more weary of character risks, a lesson being learned, thanks to Hernandez.

No word yet on how the firm would be paid: either with a check from the university or a bunch of Manziel autographed memorabilia.

Settling in quite nicely into the SEC cesspool.

@nashorn99 In five years, Manziel will be lucky to even be in the NFL.  With his size and his arm, I don't see it.  Holding a clipboard isn't going to create a whole lot of drama.

@mystafugee No prob. Just set up another banquet and get a bunch of rich old white people to pay a couple grand a pop for the privileged of being in Manziel's presence.
