The San Francisco 49ers have signed Austin Collie to bolster their wide receiver corps, reports ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The deal is for one year.

Collie played in one game for the Indianapolis Colts last season before tearing a patella tendon. Since entering the NFL in 2009, he has suffered three concussions. In 42 games with the Colts, the former BYU star caught 173 passes for 1,845 yards and 16 touchdowns.

BANKS: Collie determined not to let concussion stigma cloud his future

The 49ers will be without Michael Crabtree (Achilles tear) for at least the first half of the season. Both Mario Manningham and Kyle Williams are currently on the PUP list, each rehabbing from an ACL tear.

Collie was good but he shoulda retired. He is another concussion away from something really bad happening. For all we know he may already suffer later in life from the concussions he's already had. I loved the kid as a Colt but he needs to know when to hang it up.
