San Francisco 49ers cornerback Chris Culliver tore his ACL in practice Thursday and will be out for the season, NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reported Thursday.

The news is a significant blow for the 49ers. Culliver was carted off the field after suffering the injury during the team’s afternoon practice on Thursday. He had been taken to Stanford hospital for an MRI.

Culliver’s injury is part of a string of early-season bumps and bruises for the 49ers. Star linebacker Patrick Willis was injured on Wednesday, reportedly breaking his hand. He was wearing a cast on his hand Thursday. Star wide receivers Michael Crabtree and Mario Manningham are also expected to miss significant time this season.

BANKS: Greg Jennings not helping himself with quasi-apology

Culliver had 47 tackles, two interceptions and one forced fumble last season while playing primarily as the team’s third cornerback. He was drafted in the third round out of South Carolina in 2011.

He caused a stir before the Super Bowl when he made derogatory remarks about the possibility of having a gay player in the NFL.

This is real bad news for the Niners.  The one thing they don't have is adequate depth.  They were very fortunate last year having very few injuries.  I told Niner fans after last year that they would not be so lucky this year.  It doesn't work like that.  It was just a very fortunate year.  We shall see how they are able to overcome injuries that most teams have to endure.

Dammit, '9ers! As a 'Hawks fan, I want both our teams to be at full throttle when we play each other. Besides, how else is the rest of the league gonna know we're the two best teams in it?

Maybe the nfl should follow eagles Kelly and NO tackling in pre season.  Then nfl can play touch football instead !!!

How are the Hawks one best teams in the league? Because a couple of sports channels and your fans say so, why don't we let a few games go by before you start calling the Hawks one of the best, after all they have one play off win in how many years? Pump the brakes a bit there champ and let's not get too far ahead of yourself.

@Zeshan That is not reality.  This is the NFL.  No team can ever go through a season injury free.  The Niners were very fortunate last year as they didn't have too many serious injuries.

@WHO*IS*ESPN That's not working out so well for the Eagles though. Maclin tore his ACL in a no-contact drill.
