The city of Seattle missed out earlier this year when the Phoenix Coyotes decided to stay in Arizona instead of moving to another city.

But there may be new hopes for the Emerald City to get an NHL franchise.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman is pushing for an expansion team that would begin play in the city in the 2014-15 season and is “encouraging” the NHL’s Board of Governors to grant Seattle a franchise, according to Seattle radio station KJR.

The team would most likely have to play in KeyArena, the former home of the NBA’s Seattle SuperSonics before they left in 2008 to move to Oklahoma City. Quebec City, Las Vegas and Kansas City have also been mentioned as cities for possible league expansion.

Yes!  NHL belongs in Seattle!!

Bettman has city leaders in a number of cities who are willing to find massive amounts of cash for expansion teams that will stink for a number of years. This is a win-win for the other owners - expansion fees and the chance to dump overpriced bench-warmers in a "draft" - and a neat little way to pocket some sweet walking around money.

Based on the new re-alignments, the west needs two more teams to equal the east. I say Seattle & Portland would be good fits for teams. Move Phoenix to the central and everything's lined up...

@DEJ1948 get friigin real fella. Seattle will have one of the most natural rivalries in sports when our team plays the Canucks. Not to mention Seattle has history with the Stanley Cup...Seattle is the first American city to win the dang thing. Seattle Metropolitans 2014!!!

Seattle can't hold a candle to Portland as a hockey town.  Never has.  Never will.  Not to mention that we already have an NHL ready arena.  All we need now is to get Paul Allen's mind right.  Word is he's more interested than ever in bringing NHL hockey to the Rose Garden.  Are you listening Mr. Bettman?

LOL is this a joke?! Portland has been little brother to Seattle always, if NHL wanted to expand in Portland they could have many times, but they haven't. Anyone outside Portland would prefer to see a team in Seattle then portland, and why shouldn't they? Seattle is a large international city with the fan base that is hungering for the NHL. I don't see any grass roots organizations in Portland like Seattle. Bettman is probably laughing at the idea of having Portland over Seattle. There's room for 1 team in the NW and Seattle should be it. I guarantee no one in Seattle wpuld cheer for a Portland team but the people of Oregon always cheer for Seattle teams. IE; Seahawks mariners. Put the crack pipe down!

@DEJ1948 Just spent the weekend in Portland with an NHL player who many would easily recognize. Not one person said anything to him.. I have a feeling you may be ready for the NHL, but your fellow Portlander's aren't.
