The Chicago White Sox traded pitcher Jake Peavy to the Boston Red Sox Tuesday as part of a three-team, seven-player deal, the Red Sox announced.

Red Sox infielder Jose Iglesias will move to the Detroit Tigers, and Tigers pitcher Brayan Villarreal is going to Boston. Tigers outfielder Avisial Garcia was dealt to the White Sox.

The Red Sox also sent minor league pitchers J.B. Wendelken, Francelis Montas, and infielder Cleuluis Rondon to the White Sox.

CBSSports.com reports that the Tigers needed an infielder because the team is expecting shortshop Jhonny Peralta to be suspended as part of Major League Baseball’s investigation into the Biogenesis clinic.

Peavy is 8-4 with a 4.28 ERA and 76 strikeouts in 80 innings pitched this season and was scratched from his start Tuesday against Cleveland Indians amid trade rumors.

Peavy, a three-time All-Star and 2007 National League Cy Young Award winner, recently came back from a rib injury that forced him to miss over a month of action. Multiple teams had been reportedly interested in Peavy as Wednesday’s non-waiver trade deadline approached, and he said yesterday that he was just waiting out the process.

“And it’s been that way for a quite a while. It’s a little bit different when you’re on the road too, when you have to leave. If you’re at home, you’re a little more stable with your stuff,” Peavy said. “My kids start school not before too long and I’ll be on the way to see them but can’t make any plans. The next 24 hours will be a relief on us all when we have some direction on what my future holds.”

JAFFE: Trades for Lee, Pence and Rios that should happen, but probably won’t

For those upset that the Red Sox traded Iglesias, or think that the Red Sox got hosed...here are the reasons that Iglesias has been traded:

1.  He is not considered the best SS or 3B in the Sox farm system, even considering who will be ready for next year.  The Sox seem committed to leaving Bogaerts at SS for the long term and have Middlebrooks and Cecchini to battle it out for the spot in 2014.

2.  It seems that  the Red Sox brass believe that Iglesias is more realistically projected as the batter he has been with the .202 average that he has sported (with 1 XBH) over the last 85 AB's than the .400+ hitter we has over the first 140 AB's.  This means that his value will literally never be higher.

3.  He has had some maturity issues.  The Red Sox were unimpressed with how he handled his demotion to Triple A after the first few weeks of the season, even though it was a guarantee going in that it was going to happen.

This is a sell high at its finest form and I am pleased that we got Peavy even though he clearly is not the pitcher he once was.

Very bad move for Red Sox, esp in long term.   Peavy doesn't stay healthy, and isn't all that good when he is healthy.
Who the heck do they have to play 3B now?  Certainly nobody who gives them what Iglesias has.

Great trade for Tigers - good young player to replace Peralta when he's suspended in a day or so.
White Sox got a nice prospect, but not really much value for Peavy.... depending on whether there is more involved than this article provides.

should have kept Iglesias. that kid is really special in the field.

Bad trade.  Peavy is one of the most overrated pitchers in the league and Iglesias has a bright future. This isn't Hanley Ramirez for Josh Beckett.  This is a horrible trade.

you're a fool comparing ruth to iglesias, and did you even read the article iglesias is going to detroit. peavy is a proven star

If true this is the stupidest trade by the Red Sox since they sold the Babe to the Yankees. And an absolute steal by the White Sox of a guy who may become a star.

@wtfields1103 look at the post above you.

The Red Sox are loaded with infield prospects. Cecchini and Middlebrooks are both suitable replacements at 3B.

Iggy is not that good. He didn't have a spot on this team beyond a utility player.

@dt Iglesias isn't even the 4th best Red Sox infield prospect. He is no hanley. He is Brendan Ryan.

@yankeeh8ter12 - You have serious reading comprehension issues. I did not "compare" Iglesias to Ruth or any other player. Peavy has been a mediocre #3-4 starter for three seasons - and is coming off an injury. This has more to do with Red Sox ownership needing to cover for the blunder of signing Drew for $9.3 million.

@WilyCoyoteSuperGenius "may become a star" He isn't quite there yet and may never get there. Considering age, health, stats past and present. this "is" a bad trade.

You also have to consider the club house. What does it do in there. What are they thinking. I would have traded both Gomes and Victorino. Neither can catch, neither seems to be in a game they don't know where to throw or to who......245 avg's? comon' clean the bench of the trash.

Trade Gomes & Victorino?    How you gonna do that - they don't bring more than long-shot prospects in return.
