Ohio State has suspended running back Carlos Hyde for at least the first three games of the upcoming season, head coach Urban Meyer announced Tuesday, the suspension stemming from an altercation at a Columbus night club.

Hyde, a senior, will miss home games against Buffalo and San Diego State and a road game at California.

In an interview with ESPN on Wednesday, Meyer said, “Our players are taught to walk away. (Hyde’s) punishment was because he didn’t walk away…If criminal charges would have been filed, he would have been dismissed from team.”

The Columbus Police Department announced Tuesday that Hyde will not face assault charges from an incident that occurred at Sugar Bar 2 earlier this month. Hyde was suspended indefinitely last week pending the outcome of legal proceedings.

Last season, Hyde rushed for 970 yards and 16 touchdowns on 185 attempts as a junior.

When you listen to the new tough talk comIng out of Mr Meyer, you almost get the impression he's a no nonsense "I don't care if we lose them all we teach character here" ball coach. However his history shows us that it's just words and he's under pressure as a result of the Hernandez mess, 43 arrests at Florida; and the hits Meyer is taking, to show some backbone. Tressel did a few suspensions always picking out the real "tough" games to bench a big time kid. He kept his QB out of the Miami of Ohio game which indeed was closer that anyone thought it would be. Now "The Warden" has really handicapped his team by going into the real important matches with Buffalo, San Diego St ad Cal minus a stud or two. The Bucketes could sweep the three easily with their helmets on backwards, in high heels or ballet slippers. Someone pléase tell the man, to just handle his criminals without the empty self-praise on how tough he wishes us to think he is, history be damned.

For you haters, he didn't have to be suspended at all, that's OSU's decision.

It's a shame he's being suspended for simply being stupid..

"This was very serious. I'll have to suspend him for more than a quarter of the opener against Nowhere St." - Urban Meyer.

I live in Columbus and often see players about town.  BTW:  They are huge men.  Hard not guess that they are players when you see 3 guys all about 6'6 300lbs walking together.  Anyway, I have talked to them and so help me, they tell me people PICK FIGHTS with them.  Smaller guys pick fights with them.  It seems unbelievable but i asked more than one player and he said it happens so often he avoids going to bars and nightclubs.

Ya- I cannot count the number of times I remember teams suspending players for 3 games... But announcing the first 3 games are against crap teams so the suspension will commence when they play "real" teams. Happens all the time....

Wow suspending him for the patsy games scheduled, what a punishment.  Hey Ohio State, how about suspending him for the first 3 conference games instead?  Oh yeah, thats right, can only punish when they have the patsy portion of the schedule.

@tussie2525 When you say "haters" I get a vision of some fat pregnant 13 year old girl on the Maurey Povich show flipping the audience off and screaming "beep you...ya'll just haters... you don't know me... ya'll just jealous"

@tussie2525 Yeah, he was suspended under the "I'm under scrutiny because a bunch of my players at Florida committed crimes and recently one of them was charged with murder."

@T23 ...and you bought that line?  I'm sure they feed that line to the cops.

@MikeHarrison  Did you see the video? He shouldn't be suspended at all. Mindy Drayer you should be ashamed. And you call yourself a reporter.

@MikeHarrison I suppose that you think the suspension should be for the last three games of the season.   The guy is not facing charges for anything.    Did you get that far in the article?

@MikeHarrison Except that SDSU and maybe even Cal will be as good as some of the teams on the conference schedule.

@mystafugee @T23 I've known a couple of the Ohio State players over the years and unfortunately on a campus the size of Ohio State, there are a lot of meatheads who need to prove something to their girlfriend I guess because this does indeed happen.

maybe they should stay OUT of bars to begin with?

@doghockey @MikeHarrison He's not facing charges only because the girl involved decided (for one reason or another) NOT to press charges.  The video tape clearly shows an altercation.

@crimsonmastodon @joblackbird68 @MikeHarrison OK Crimson we get it you hate Ohio State and blah blah blah. Your nuts if you think those so called assault charges would stick. Then again your going to hate on him and Ohio State no matter what. So keep trolling man!

@Rick4 @crimsonmastodon No, the reason being that the CITY chose no to press charges because there was nothing to charge him with.  The city can't charge him for being stupid and not walking away, that's the coaches job, which he did.

@crimsonmastodon

The reason being that if she pressed assault charges against him, he would press assault charges against her, and be every bit as likely to make them stick.  Which is the usual reason that assault charges are never filed in altercations such as this when they play out without media attention.
