Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz will not be suspended for his dugout tirade during Saturday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles, the Boston Globe reports.

According to the Globe, Major League Baseball reviewed Ortiz’s actions and deemed them not necessary for a suspension.

During the 7-3 Red Sox victory, Ortiz started in on home plate umpire Tim Timmons in the seventh inning following a strikeout. Ortiz believed he had drawn a walk earlier in the at-bat.

After returning to the dugout, Ortiz proceeded to destroy the clubhouse phone. He was ejected after his tirade and had to be restrained by teammates and coaches when he tried to yell at umpires on the field.

Ortiz gets away again... Many times with PEDs, and now with this.....

Wait, this time might be rage and PEDs all bunched together.

I'm a lifelong Sox fan and I like Ortiz, but this absolutely should be a suspension. Yet more evidence of how completely senile Selig is.

If I were to go to Nat's Park and smash a cell phone I would be in jail. If I go to the office building where I work and smash something I would be arrested. If Ortiz does it in Baltimore we just get a good chuckle. These guys live in a bubble. No wonder so many of these guys end up broke.

For destruction of private property, Mr. Ortiz should be arrested and prosecuted for his actions. Then maybe MLB will do something to him. Destroying a clubhouse phone is not a part of the game of baseball and should not be tolerated. If MLB won't suspend him, the Red Sox should.

Looks like Roid Rage to me! Another spoiled brat multi-millionaire pro athlete. What a fine example they are setting for the youth of today. He should have been suspended for the rest of the season.

I would like to see MLB teams ban him from their ballparks.

He's a star and MLB treats stars differently than all the rest. Is anyone really surprised?

What a joke! The man is swinging a bat like a mad man, destroying private property, with freaking teammates right there within swinging distance. These are extreme actions that warrant some sort of suspension and heft fine. Ridiculous,

If he destroys a phone over balls and strikes, I can't imagine what might happen at home if his wif....never mind.

His bench actions were an endangerment to his teammates around him. Especially Pedrioa sitting to his right. Yet there's no consequence. But Miggy can get ejected from a game for arguing balls and strikes. There's something wrong with that picture.

Great example for the kids David; get angry, destroy something with a baseball bat, walk away with no punishment... You should be very proud of the example you set.

Papi can do no harm apparently. Name mentioned in steroids report, nothing happens. He is always very vocal arguing balls and strikes, and nothing happens. This tirade was deserving of at least a 1 game suspension. Yes, the calls were horrible, but that gives you no excuse to put your teamates in a bind, and almost injure them with debris. Im so over his "happy go lucky" personality with the media. Hs an ahole, and now everyone should know that.

He should be suspended.  MLB wonders why they are starting to lose fans left and right.  PED's, inconsistent discipline.  Not worth my time to bother with trying to follow the sport.  Good luck to the fans that remain.

I'm far from a Boston fan but come on, that pitch that should've drawn the walk was high as hell! Haha, whatever, still entertaining to see Ortiz go apeshiznits on that phone.

How on earth is he not suspended for at least 5 games?  Oh yeah, he plays for the Red Sox.  Same reason he wasn't suspended for 'roids.

@AZ Arrested and prosecuted?   The sanctimonious bs gets deeper as the number of posts on this story grows.   Arrested and prosecuted?   Where do you people come up with this stuff?

@WilyCoyoteSuperGenius Suspended for the season?  Good one.   And if you still believe that these guys are role models for kids, well, you have not been paying attention for, oh, about forever.

@train805

The calls weren't horrible. Ortiz the all-knowing stood up before the ball even reached him, and it whizzed right past his potbelly.

Oh well, it seems he won't be formally punished, but the empires aren't going to forget it. Maybe "the blown" call last night at home plate was a reminder to  Farrell to keep his overpaid narcissist under control.

@train805 The ever-lethal phone debris injury.   Does someone have to die before there is a stop to the madness?

@Charles69 baseball dont need you if you run away because of that.. ( I really doub it) but people fight all the time in sports... it was wrong to do that.. but I dont think he deserves a suspension just because of that. that umpire was crazy to call that high ball a strike. he was angry thats alla. big papi is always the cool head at the club house.. so he deserves a chance

@mugzbo You sound just like one of those "It's just Manny being Manny" defenders. Yes, violence & stupidity are really "entertaining".

@mugzbo yeah, it's great cause it's not YOUR phone, I'm sure you'd be okay if he did that in  your house.

@doghockey @AZ If you did the same thing to a pay phone or a phone in McDonald's, what do you think would happen? You would be arrested, period! But for some reason, a professional athlete can smash a phone in the opposing team's stadium? Take a bat to the ballpark and start smashing something in the stadium and then tell us what happens. Why do you people rationalize anything athletes do?

Charles69
Charles69

@Chipper4Life @Charles69 -- not suspending him is condoning this behavior.  so from this point forward, so long as no other player gets suspended for the same behavior, then baseball is being consistent.  Something tells me that a 2nd year player doing the same thing would get a suspension.

And baseball does need me.  It needs my $$$ for season tickets, my $$$ for concessions and my $$$ for memorabilia.  If baseball is going to take your attitude of not needing me because they are not consistent in their discipline, the game will be dead in 20 years or less.

@MrArlington So you agree that filing charges is the right thing and the wrong thing to do in this case?  Way to take a stand.

doghockey
doghockey

@6marK6 He wasn't in McDonald's now was he?  The owners of the property, not internet posters, have to file charges if there are to be any arrests.  Apparently they have chose not to.  But by all means, if seeking justice in this matter is that important to you, fight on.
