Pete Rose, Major League Baseball’s all-time hit leader and one of baseball’s grittiest players, opened up about Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper and his style of play. Rose, nicknamed “Charlie Hustle” for his own aggressive play on the field, said Harper needs to know the difference between playing hard and playing recklessly.

In an interview with MLB Network Radio, Rose said Harper’s transition from catcher to the outfield has hindered Harper’s distinction between playing hard and playing recklessly. Rose said he would tell Nationals manager Davey Johnson to play Harper as deep as possible until he learns all the caroms and quirks of every stadium to avoid running into walls like Harper did in Dodgers Stadium, which forced him to miss more than a month.

Rose cited the Los Angeles Angels’ young sensation Mike Trout as a player who plays hard and said playing hard doesn’t necessarily equate to injury if you “play the game the right way.” Rose said Harper is a “talented kid” and he’s only a “20-year-old” and he will learn from playing the game.

Interesting that this is coming from the guy who recklessly threw his body into a catcher in an exhibition game (I.e. the all-star game) which could have resulted in an injury of his own that would hurt his team, and did in fact ruin the career of the young catcher he ran over (Fosse).

Pete Rose gets banned from baseball due to betting, but we still have A-Roid and Braun around letting them do PEDs. Everyone who did PEDs should be banned from the record books and hall of fame, especially if Pete isn't allowed in.

Good advice from Pete Rose. Harper will probably not learn how to play until he's wearing pin stripes, which will be in about three years.
