The Atlanta Falcons and quarterback Matt Ryan have agreed to a five-year contract extension worth $103.75 million, according to multiple reports.

Ryan will receive $59 million in guaranteed salary with $63 million coming to Ryan during the first three years of his new deal. Ryan’s guaranteed money is second only to the $61.5 million the New Orleans Saints gave quarterback Drew Brees in 2012.

Ryan was entering the final year of his rookie contract before the Falcons decided to lock up their franchise quarterback until he is 32 years old. His new deal will earn him $20.75 million annually.

Ryan, selected third overall in the 2008 draft, had his best season in the NFL last season, throwing for 4,719 yards with 32 touchdowns to his 14 interceptions.

The dude is a machine.  The only people who toss the "one  playoff win" stat out are the people who just watch Sports Center highlights and haven't actually seen him play often. This is the most  consistently clutch player  I have seen in the 4th Q. Period.  The end of the NFC championship game is the only time  I can remember a 4th Q drive that didn't result in a win.  He is a Michael Jordan type player when it comes to finishing.

Furthermore, Ryan is the only reason that the Falcons have been relevant. Remember that he didn't always have Tony Gonzalez, and Julio Jones  to catch passes. It was just Roddy White first. They went out and got the other two because they recognized what that offense could be with more than one weapon for Ryan to utilize.

He deserves it.. I dont want to hear everyone sit here and say the same thing.."he only has 1 playoff win".. So what.. Im sure he will have plenty more in the future. I mean, this guy has the most wins in the NFL since he was drafted.. He also has the most 4th quarter comebacks since he was drafted, and led the league last year. He has never had a losing record, and he has only been in the league for FIVE years... A Rodgers wasn't even starting going into his fifth year. He can't help that their defense was terrible last year, and every other year. 24 points against SF in the NFC Championship last year should be enough points to beat that team, but their defense couldn't stop anything in the second half of that game. This guy is ELITE.

For those whose only contribution to this thread is that he only has 1 playoff win, answer me this:

How many players are on an NFL roster?  How many players take the field at a time? How many QB's have an impact on the game when the defense is on the field?

Could the reason that he only has 1 playoff win be that while he is one of the elite qb's in the league, the Falcons defense sucks? I have been watching the Falcons for 30+ years. Their defense sucks.  Matt Ryan along with the rest of the offense scored 24 points in the NFC Championship. Please explain to me how he was supposed to stop the 49'ers from scoring 28 points?

1 playoff win= 103 million in today's NFL

I would pick him over most QB's in the league, but what do I know. Not bad deal for Ryan+Falcons.

I always wonder what reaction these type of stories are supposed to illicit. A man I don't know just got a huge contract to play a game. I guess I am not really that excited about it.

His rookie contract was for $72 Million.  This extension is for $103 Million.  Figure he'll get another 3-5 year extension at roughly the same $20 Million per year.  Matt Ryan could very conceivably earn a quarter of a billion dollars from the NFL over his career.  What's he got so far, ONE playoff victory?  That's right.  ONE.  Matt, win some playoff games (plural).  The pressure is on.  You owe the franchise a SB victory.

what a joke 100 million for a guy whose had Tony Gonzalez Roddy White Turner Julio Jones and only JUST got his first playoff win after how many years in the league? He has one of the worst if not THE worst playoff record of all the starting QBs yes even worse than Tebow and Mark Sanchez.

@John4 Well, I was going to post until you conveyed my thoughts succinctly.

@D.1 @John4 Ws and Ls are team stats.  He threw for 396 yards against SF but he can't beat them singlehandedly.

@NY NBK Far Superior Maybe you are new to this NFL thing, but QBs get paid.  They get paid as much on potential as they do on past results.
