Madison Square Garden, home to the New York Knicks and New York Rangers and host of many keynote performances and sporting events, is going to be relocated within the next 10 years, according to a report in the New York Times

The New York City Council voted 47 to 1 in favor of moving Madison Square Garden from its current location to make way for a revamped Pennsylvania Station. James L. Dolan, who controls the arena, has been notified that he has 10 years to evict from the premises that Madison Square Garden has occupied for the last 45 years.

Since Madison Square Garden opened in 1879, this would mark the fifth occasion that the arena has been relocated. City Council speaker Christine C. Quinn said that this is “the first step” of the relocation process in order to build a Penn Station “suitable for the 21st century” in New York City.

Dolan recently spent $968 million on renovations to the current Madison Square Garden which are expected to be completed by the fall.

This is just a joke. There's no way to relocate Madison Square Garden in 10 years. It'd take that long just to get construction permits approved. And it's not like there's a glut of available real estate in Manhattan to build on. I'm betting a whole lot of lawyers are going to make a whole lot of money on this, and in 20 years, MSG will be exactly where it is today.

Wow.  This has got to be the absolute biggest waste of money I've witnessed in my lifetime - besides welfare, social security and the Iraq War.  If that's the decision, why not halt construction on the current MSG, find a new site, and immediately begin diverting funds to THAT construction?  Oh wait, this is coming from the same city council that decided to make soda illegal...

I would love to know how much of that $968 million in not-yet-completed renovations was funded by public money.  What a waste.

This is way overdue. The original Penn Station, which was considered a Grand Central kind of gem, was ripped apart to make way for MSG back in the mid 60s. What you see now in the current Penn Station is a sad descendant of the original.

I'm glad this is going to change.

Dolan's gonna be ticked when he gets back from band practice.

This reeks of the kind of bureaucratic idiocy that sent the Dodgers to LA.

@nosemanwvu You're an idiot. Social Security isn't a waste of money. Social Security is an investment by workers and their employers to provide funds for their retirement and in the case that they're unable to physically work. The fact that the funds were raided by politicians instead of being invested correctly is why it's currently underfunded. We need to put those crooks in jail, not get rid of Social Security.

@Petzuk It's not going to change. Penn Station will still be a dump, just with lots of office space above it generating more revenue. It's all about the Benjamins...

Hope they run boy Dolan out of town. The Rangers and Knicks will never win titles with him in the way.

Not at all Muser. The Dodgers left because Robert Moses wanted them to move to Queens where the Mets now play. Penn Station is a major people moving hub in NYC. It's improvement is more important than an entertainment center.

@Petzuk is absolutely correct and obviously knows about Penn Station and its history. Folks consumed by sports and not much else won't likely know of the extensive history behind the disaster of Penn Station being destroyed in the 60's and replaced by what in comparison is a monstrosity. Hey, I know MSG is cool for a lot of folks. But ... the demise of Penn Station has handcuffed transportation in NYC. Original Penn Station one of the most beautiful and respected structures in the world and it is extremely important to replace it.
