The Rangers added a much-needed arm to their starting rotation by trading for Cubs right-hander Matt Garza on Monday. They will get their first look at Garza Wednesday night at home when he makes his first start against the Yankees. Since June, however, the team’s offense has been struggling even more than its injury-riddled pitching staff. General manager Jon Daniels may be trying to acquire more power for his lineup through a trade with Chicago’s other team.

MLB.com’s T.R. Sullivan reports the Rangers are in active discussion with the White Sox regarding Alex Rios.

Jon Morosi of FOX Sports added via Twitter that the Rangers are also interested in White Sox outfielder Alejandro De Aza.

JAFFE: Rangers pay steep price to finally land Matt Garza

Rios is batting .278/.333/.442 with 12 homers and 21 stolen bases on the season and would not be a defensive downgrade in right field. His contract calls for $12.5 million in both 2013 and 2014 and contains a club option for $13.5 million. His White Sox deal also includes a trade kicker.

The Red Sox and Pirates reportedly have also had interest in obtaining Rios.

De Aza is batting .275/.332/.437 with 12 homers and 11 steals and is under contract through the 2015 season.

With or without a trade, the Rangers’ offense is in danger of losing power hitter Nelson Cruz, whose name has been linked to Major League Baseball’s Biogenesis investigation of players taking performance-enhancing drugs. Cruz could appeal or push for an eventual suspension to start next season, but he’s scheduled to become a free agent and could instead opt to take his medicine this season and get it over with.

With the Rangers in a tight race with the A’s for the AL West lead and the AL Wild Card chase, the team appears open to making another deal.
