After Barcelona rejected their second bid to sign midfielder Cesc Fábregas, Manchester United is looking to up the ante and possibly sign Fábregas to a record-shattering transfer fee, reports The Guardian.

United made the offer before Tito Vilanova resigned as Barcelona’s coach last week and were privately given the same response as before saying that Fábregas is “completely nontransferable”.

Manchester United is looking to pay £35 million (roughly $53,725,000) for Fábregas which would surpass the £30.75m ($47,201,250) they paid to sign Dimitar Berbatov from Tottenham Hotspur in 2008.

“My understanding is that Ed’s had a response and he’s spoken with them and again we’ve made a second offer,” Ed Woodward, the club’s executive vice-president said. “But Ed’s dealing with that, rather than me personally here.”

More from the Guardian:

Barcelona have reached an agreement with Gerardo Martino for the Argentinian to take over from Vilanova and much may depend on whether the 50-year-old, whose coaching jobs have included Paraguay and, in his native country, Newell’s Old Boys, will want Fábregas to remain at the Camp Nou and become a pivotal part of his plans.

BUY  Fab and they win the league without any doubt.

Moyes smart to pursue him.

Just Fab and Van Persie alone and you add 8-10 goals to what RVP

United certainly needs improvement in midfield, Scholes has retired, and when Carrick isn't playing they receive little creative play from this area. Improvement is needed....Ando isn't working out and Clev isn't a world beater. I would prefer Cesc (a proven EPL performer) over Thiago.

All that said, why would Barca want to sell him? They just lost Xavi's heir for very little and loaned out Rafinha to Vigo for the season. Dumping Cesc would leave them shorthanded when all the signs are pointing to Xavi and Iniesta missing more time through injury this coming season. They'll need Cesc more than ever. Serge Roberto and another kid from Barca B are too raw to pick up the slack left by Thiago leaving the club. I doubt the new manager will let him go unless he knows of a player that he can immediately sign on the cheap.

United needs to counter the new Chelsea signings....big time.

Barca does not need the money. Man U. apparently has too much.

In my view, Fabregas is not among the world's top 12 midfielders.  Great vision and passing, somewhat weak on the ball, defensively below average.  Why would ManU break the bank to acquire him?

(Answering myself) The Red Devils have been historically strong in the middle, but it was a weakness last year in the CL.  Evidence of that is calling Scholes out of retirement.

FAB is lights out, but naturally BARCA have no clue what they are doing on transfers AND played him out of position.
