Charles Barkley calls Sixers’ lack of head coach “a joke”

With August approaching, the Philadelphia 76ers remain the only NBA team without a head coach. In outspoken former star Charles Barkley’s opinion, that fact is “a joke.”

Appearing on Comcast SportsNet’s “Philly Sports Talk” on Friday, Barkley voiced his disagreement with the Sixers’ decision to allow their coaching search to drag on into late July.

Doug Collins, their coach of the last three years, resigned on April 18, and new general manager Sam Hinkie — hired on May 11 — has reached out to several candidates since joining the organization, with Sixers assistant Michael Curry and Spurs assistant Brett Brown seen as the two front runners.

From CSNPhilly.com:

“I think that’s one of the silliest things that I’ve seen in sports in a long time,” Barkley said on Comcast SportsNet’s Friday edition of “Philly Sports Talk.” “I’m in Philly during the summer as you know, and I’m watching and reading every day — to not have a coach under contract by now, I think that’s a joke. I don’t know what they’re waiting on. You’re playing summer-league games, people need to know who’s in charge. They got players who are playing in the summer league, they got assistant coaches coaching the team. You just can’t bring somebody in, and him have instant credibility — he has to build rapport with the players.”

Curry coached the team to a 1-4 during the Summer League in Orlando from July 7-12.

Hinkie has led a rebuilding process since taking the helm, allowing center Andrew Bynum — who called questions about his work ethic “nonsense” after signing with Cleveland — to walk as a free agent and trading All-Star Jrue Holiday on draft day.

In my opinion (I respect all others' opinions) Charles Barkley is The best NBA analyst, what some people don't like is that Chuck is never afraid to tell the truth

Meanwhile, the non-existent head coach calls Charles Barkley a "fat round tub of goo with a really bad putting stroke".

I hope the Sixers are better run than the Bynum trade fiasco, loss of Lou Miller, loss of Collins and iffy trade of Holliday suggest.

Older Sixer fans recall when the Malone championship team was reduced to tatters through poor decisions.

Why is it news when Barkley speaks? It's not like he's an expert on anything.

"when are you planning on hiring a new head coach?"  "That's a clown question bro." - GM Sam Hinkie

I love listening to Barkley. He has more sense than about 95% of other sports 'pundits'. In any sport.

Who would have ever imagined this guy would be one of the few rational negro's commenting on the Zimmerman case, saying he agreed with the verdict.

Up until this I mostly couldn't stand the guy, now I have a bit more respect.

Even in the off season, this mental pygmy can't keep his yap shut. Hey Breadtruck, go lose yourself on the 19th hole for a few months and give civilization a break.

No one wants the job because everyone knows it's a "placeholder" job for 1 season. They are obviously looking to tank for Wiggins or Parker next year in addition to having another top 5 pick from the Holiday trade to NO. Right before that draft is when the Sixers will be holding their real coaching search.

@Mark112 what exactly did Charles say here that was inflammatory or wrong?  He spoke about the obvious and was candid as usual - something sorely lacking in modern sports commentary

I dont know what Barkley has done to offend you, but hes one of the few commentators on TV that actually gives a fresh, renewed take on the different stories instead of the same  pre-packaged responses given by all the other announcers/analysts

bring on MORE Charles Barkley

@ITATTRACTS @Mark112

Mark112 is a known hater.  Sir Charles gets more ladies, has more money, is better looking, and is smarter than Mark112 could ever hope to be, even in dreams.

Thus the hate.

Negro? Seriously?

So, every post here directed at "Sir" Bark-ley pertains to the article? You got your leftist "likes" and standard homophobic dig in, now run along little boy.
