Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones announced that quarterback Tony Romo has been cleared to begin practice when training camp starts on Sunday, according to ESPN.com.

Romo has been held out of offseason workouts including minicamp other than walk-through practices and light throwing after undergoing minor surgery to have a non-cancerous cyst removed from his back in April.

More from ESPN.com:

“He feels good. He looks good,” Jones said. “He’s uniquely out running mountains right now in the West, so he’s getting himself physically in shape. He’s never thrown a lot in the offseason. This is a time where he rests his arm. I’m confident his weight is right and feel he’ll be in shape and let it go.”

While Romo deferred to backup Kyle Orton during the offseason, Romo will have more input in the Cowboys’ offensive scheme this season. His added influence follows his signing a six-year extension in March worth $108 million with $55 million guaranteed.

Romo ranked high statistically among NFL quarterbacks in 2012 — third in passing yards (4,903) and passing attempts (648) and sixth in touchdown passes (28) — but also tied Drew Brees with a league-high 19 interceptions.

Romo may need as many training camp snaps as possible to adjust to offensive coordinator Bill Callahan taking over play-calling duties from head coach Jason Garrett.

Romo’s role in the Cowboys’ inability to make the playoffs in each of the last three seasons led to his recent showing in Sports Illustrated‘s poll of the NFL’s most overrated players. NFL.com’s Elliott Harrison countered critics declaring Romo is one of the league’s most underrated players.
