The Texas Rangers and Chicago Cubs are discussing a trade that would send starting pitcher Matt Garza to Texas, Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi reported Thursday.

Citing major-league sources, Rosenthal and Morosi reported that the two teams have had “extensive talks” and discussed the “framework” of a deal. The report mentions other teams that are still interested — the Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox, Arizona Diamondbacks, St. Louis Cardinals, and Cleveland Indians — but says that the Rangers are the “most motivated.”

ESPN.com reported last Sunday that the Rangers were the clear “front-runners” for Garza. They have had interest in trading for him since 2011.

The 29-year-old Garza, who has been injury prone especially over the past year, remains the lone front-line starter available ahead of the July 31 trade deadline. In 11 starts this season, Garza is 6-1 with a 3.17 ERA with the Cubs. He has 62 strikeouts in just 71 innings pitched.

Despite a flurry of injuries to their pitching staff, the Rangers sit tied atop the American League Wild Card standings and just two games back of the Oakland Athletics in the AL West.

Let's see if the Cubs receive more value for Garza than the players they surrendered to the Rays when they  acquired Garza.  That'll be interesting.

As a Cub's fan, even I think Garza is fools' gold.

@SeanHHS I think there are National League pitchers and there are American League pitchers. Garza will regain himself back in the AL.

I'd rather Texas spend the extra bucks to sign Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez. Doesn't cost you any prospects. Of course that is easy for me to say...it's not my money
