Report: Lakers eye LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony for 2014

The Los Angeles Lakers are looking at possibly adding LeBron James or Carmelo Anthony after the end of this upcoming season, reports ESPN.com.

Both stars could become free-agents next season if they opt out of their current deals. A host of other players, including Dwyane Wade, Amar’e Stoudemire and Chris Bosh have early-termination options on five-year deals signed in the summer of 2010.

Luol Deng, Danny Granger, Andrew Bogut and Dirk Nowitzki will all be unrestricted free agents next summer. The team also has to decide what to do with Kobe Bryant, who is entering the final year of his contract this season.

James, a two-time NBA Finals MVP, said recently that he isn’t thinking about the summer of 2014.

Lakers lost out on center Dwight Howard when he decided to sign with the Houston Rockets instead of signing a five-year deal with the team.

More from ESPN.com:

Opinions are split on whether the Lakers can actually land James or Anthony, with one source calling it “realistic” and another saying it was “far-fetched at this point.” Nonetheless, the Lakers have made it clear they are positioning themselves for a run at one and perhaps even two of the superstars who could become free agents in 2014 by refusing to commit to any contract past this upcoming season, multiple sources have said.

First of all, why would Carmelo Anthony wanna leave New York City for the Lakers? That team doesn't get a better seed than 4 of 5 and maybe exits the WC Finals if they are lucky.

LeBron joining Kobe would not be better than the big 3 they have now, so if he doesn't stay with Miami he goes elsewhere.  I could only see it if the Lakers didn't sign Kobe and they got both James and Anthony.

These boards are slower than Andy Reid in a buffet line.

Man these boards are slow. Lakers are going to have to be happy with Deng.

LeBron: Let's see, would I rather live in a state where I pay no income tax and work for Pat Riley, or do I want to move to LA, give the state 11% of my money, and play for Dr. Buss's clown children?

Melo+KB would just be the sequel to Melo+A.I., meaning high scorin, inefficient offense, poor defense & R2 of the playoffs at best.

LBJ would NEVER go to LAL, esp. while KB's there.  Bron is not the type to live up to a legacy of winnin, which is why he didn't go to CHI in '10.  He go to NYK or BKN way before the Fakers.

I'd love to see LeBron go to LA. Kobe can't stand him and LeBron doesn't care.

Melo is just another version of Kobe but not as good, they will not win crap with him.

what other options do the Lakers have? They've painted themselves deep in a corner with the heavily incentive laced T/W contract.  Lebron's going to stay or go back to Cleveland.

You would think teams would have learned from Lebron's first go around and from other free agents that one player can only end up with one team. 10 teams clearing cap space and nearly throwing away a year of rebuilding in hopes of getting one or two players only to be rejected does not sound like a great proposition. Here's an article on why teams like the Lakers and Heat are already hesitant to exceed the salary cap under the new rules:  http://wp.me/p2wecE-dy

Lebron = Yup!!

Carmelo = NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

This doesn't even make sense. Kobe and Carmelo are terrible without the ball in their hand and neither one can play defense. Then you have LeBron who might be the best guy in the league with the ball in his hands. Offense is going to be a nightmare and the defense will be even worse.

Ah box score numbers without context.  How about 33 shots and no assists for Kobe in a playoff elimination?

So what is Kobe scores the most when he takes twices as many shots as anyone else.

Al Jefferson fills up a box score too, does not make him great.   Iverson was the same, the more he scored the more his teams lost!

@espn.comment.legend And they won the championship back to back years...Lebron is a different type of player. Likely a better passer than any of the above. If you double team him he'll find the open man for a great shot.
