The Denver Broncos and left tackle Ryan Clady have agreed to a five-year, $52.5 million contract with $33 million guaranteed, ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter reported Sunday night.

The extension marks a $1.5 million annual increase from the Broncos’ previous offers to Clady, who is the team’s designated franchise player. He had rejected Denver’s previous long-term contract offers.

In February, the Broncos placed the franchise tag on their star 26-year-old left tackle. Now, it looks like a possible Broncos-Clady agreement could be the only long-term deal for a franchise-tagged player that gets done.

If the two sides did not agree on a long-term deal by Monday’s deadline, Clady would have played out the season on a one-year deal and then become a free agent next offseason. He is coming off a right shoulder injury in 2012 that required offseason surgery.

Clady has blossomed into a star during his five seasons with the Broncos and serves as the important blindside protector to quarterback Peyton Manning. He has started all 16 games in each of those seasons, and he has been named to the NFL’s All-Pro team in both 2009 and 2012.

Good signing.  A critical position on a pocket passing team.

Waaaay too much money. Waaay too much. The Broncos now have $42 million committed to just three players. Peyton, Clady and Chump Bailey. How much will they have to pay Von Miller? And will they even be able to keep him?

"The extension marks a $1.5 million annual increase from the Broncos’ previous offers to Clady...."

No it doesn't. They had a $50M deal on the table. This represents a $500K annual increase. There are incentives that can raise that, but he has to be All Pro twice in the five years.

The real difference is the additional $5m of guarenteed money ($28M vs $33M).

And only morons have respect for that clown John Clayton.

Smart move by both sides.  Now SI is it 52.5 or 57.5?  Which is the right number?  Or is John Clayton going to trump SI?
